Let the well wishing continue!

Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a son at 4:24 p.m.,” William’s and Kate’s office said in a statement issued four hours later, using her formal title. William, known as the Duke of Cambridge, was present for the birth of the child, who weighed 8 pounds, 6 ounces (3.8 kilograms). “We could not be happier,” the duke said in a statement released through the Press Association newswire later in the evening.

Three people stand between the baby and the throne; Queen Elizabeth II, who is 87, her eldest son Charles, the Prince of Wales, 64, and William, 31. William married Kate, who’s also 31, in April 2011.

Soon after, Prince William and Kate’s press secretary Ed Perkins came down the hospital steps and handed the official birth notice off. With the notice encased in a red leather folder embossed with the Buckingham Palace emblem, the orderly and a police officer drove from St. Mary’s Hospital to the Palace in a blue Jaguar.

Having arrived, the orderly passed the notice to Queen Elizabeth’s press secretary Ailsa Anderson, who posted the proclamation on an easel for the world to see.

“The queen and Prince Philip are delighted at the news,” the monarchy announced on its Twitter feed.

Cries of joy erupted from the waiting crowd amassed near Buckingham Palace as the news came through, and hundreds of onlookers — some of whom had camped outside for hours — crushed against the palace’s fences to catch a glimpse of the bulletin formally announcing the birth placed outside the palace’s forecourt.

William’s father, Charles, and his wife, Camilla, spoke of their joy and pride in becoming grandparents for the first time.

“It is an incredibly special moment for William and Catherine and we are so thrilled for them on the birth of their baby boy,” Prince Charles said in a statement. “Grandparenthood is a unique moment in anyone’s life, as countless kind people have told me in recent months, so I am enormously proud and happy to be a grandfather for the first time and we are eagerly looking forward to seeing the baby in the near future.”
