Anyone in the mood for some vintage Ian Somerhalder? If so, today’s your lucky day. We’re bringing you back to 2002 when he played a flamboyant gay man in the movie Rules of Attraction.
He wasn’t always the hunky, dreamy man he is today. Ten years ago, he was very…feminine looking. Just wait until you see those super rosy cheeks. I can’t help but wonder if that’s him in his natural state, or if he was wearing a few layers of blush.
So what made them film this particular scene?
Roger Avary, the director of the fantastic flick said that this scene was improvised. After wrapping filming early, he looked at Russell Sams, who plays Dick and thought of George Michael. Here’s more from the director on what happened:
I then told Russell, who was always game for anything, “okay, this is your first film, and as an initiation, I want you to do a striptease dance for the crew to Faith.”
As viewers can tell, he agreed to participating in the dance. The crew thought the dance was hilarious, which it is. Watching a man dancing unscripted and unprepared to a song like that is hilarious. So where does Somerhalder come in? Avary said,
Mid-way through, I looked over and saw Ian Somerhalder in the hallway in his bathrobe on the way back from make-up, looking into the room incredulously. I made a quick motion for him to “go for it” and the next thing I knew he jumped into the shot — right on the beat.
The song “Faith” came out in 1987 (yes, it’s by George Michael) and was used in this movie, which was based off the novel by Bret Easton Ellis.
