Trend Thrift: El Mercado

February 21st, 2007 // 4 Comments

I’m a sucker for presentation, especially when the presentation of a boutique is inspired by graffiti, skateboarding, and fashion. El Mercado has all three and lives up to its claim of being “LA’s finest street boutique”. Located at 5287 W .Pico Blvd, west of La Brea, El Mercado has a wide variety of hip and unique street wear designers. It is the type of store you’d expect Pharrel Williams, hip-hop princess Kelis, or even Beck to shop. My favorite part of the small corner store is the continuous artwork on the façade, as well as the inside of the boutique. And of course they carry the artist’s designs in the store; the Draftsman hoodies go for only $76 and are truly one of a kind.

The prices vary and some of the designer hoodies are pricey, however El Mercado hooks up their customers with a program called “1st Dibs”. Customers have the option to signup for the El Mercado newsletter, which offers a 60% discount on specified new products. Men’s clothing dominates the store, with only three racks for women, however what they lack in quantity they certainly make up for in quality.

Upon entering the store, I checked out some original Seventh Letter (local LA designer) tees and then headed straight for the women’s sale rack. All items on the rack were priced at half off, not bad for jackets originally priced at $60! I snagged an awesome Gentle Fawn vest with bling buttons and embroidery on the shoulder for only $12. Many times small, individually-owned boutiques offer extra special discounts on sale items, usually because they’re trying to get rid of the items to make room for new products.

More on El Mercado, plus the boutique’s overall rating and more photos, after the jump.

El Mercado has been up and coming for three years and have been carrying women’s clothing for about a year. Since El Mercado ship products nationally from the store, all sizes are offered from their large inventory. Soon they will be relocating to a larger space where they will have more room to expand their domestic shipping as well as their women’s selection.

I was impressed with their selection, but El Mercado left me wanting more, more, more!! I do hope the next time I visit them to see more accessories, perhaps they will focus on this department in their new location.
