The Katrina Round Up

September 1st, 2005 // 19 Comments

She’s been a big bitch. And nothing tames a bitch like some cold hard cash. So please donate. If you are donating, please do beware of the scam Katrina relief websites that are popping up. If you have any questions on the validity of a website, it’s always best to stick with one of the FEMA approved sites. You can also do something for the pets which have been abandoned or lost during the disaster. Noah’s Wish is a not-for-profit, animal welfare organization, with a straightforward mission.  We exist to keep animals alive during disasters. Thanks to cityrag for the link.

So what has George W. Bush been doing about this disaster. Towleroad has some thoughts on that one. Yesterday he stated the obvious.

“We are dealing with one of the worst natural disasters in our nation’s history,” Bush said after returning early to the White House from his Texas vacation to oversee recovery efforts. “This recovery will take a long time. This recovery will take years.”

There has been looting (or shopping) and gun toting of late, but for the most part it’s been people helping people survive and sustain.

Already donating to Americares – tnx Miu for the posting – we all need to pull together and help the folks down South…….

How much is gas where you guys live? I live in NC and the it was $3.09 this morning….

The looters need to be shot. Not the people that are taking food and water, but the bastards taking the televisions and stuff like that.

For the rest of the people affected by Katrina, I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

  3. MA

What do people expect Bush to do, get his mop and bucket and clean up the water himself? Before the storm hit, he signed off for FEMA to get the money so they would have it to distribute. He is also authorizing Naval ships to go down with supplies. I don’t get why people are saying he is doing nothing. My entire family lives in New Orleans and none of them are complaining about what he is doing.

On another note, I can’t wait to see which celebrities will give…or do they only help Africa?

  4. ella

I am with you on that MA. I am VERY interested in seeing which celebrities are getting involved. Brad Pitt made me so sick when he did that interview with Diane Sawyer and said that we should all donate money to Africa….Oh yeah Buddy, why don’t you take that million dollar paycheck you get for one movie and donate it towards helping our OWN COUNTRY and leave me and my $35,000 salary the fuck alone.

  5. Lisa

I agree that looters should be shot. I can not stand to watch the coverage because everytime I see a looter taking advantage of this disaster, I feel like am going to be ill.

  6. doofus

    hey ella…

the signs for gas around here (central NJ) are ranging from 2.79-3+.

which is a pretty big jump…about 40cents over night.

however, I can’t complain too much as NJ’s prices are some of the lowest in the nation. I heard that in GA, it’s hovering at around $6 per gallon.

  7. Mariana

I used to live in NOLA 2 years ago and my heart is breaking.

Most of the looting is being done out of need and desperation. These people have no food and water, their belongings (clothes, etc.) are ruined. Everyone is in primal “Lord of the Flies” survival mode. The people that couldn’t evacuate were the poorest. A small percentage are looting just based on greed.

We can’t even fathom what they’re dealing with up here, so let’s not judge too harshly please.

“Most of the looting done is out of need and desperation”

Are you kidding? The television, guns and all the other electronics those thugs are needed? For what, there is no electricity? On the news, it shows some of the looters smiling. THEY ARE ESTACTIC THEY HAVE BEEN GIVING THIS OPPORTUNITY TO STEAL AND NOT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THE POLICE. Those thugs are a disgrace to what is really going on.

  9. doofus

now ella, you know they NEED those guns…so they can shoot at the military and national guard helicopters.

seriously, tho, I’m with you. taking food and bottled water or juice is forgivable (think “Les Miserables) but the TV’s, cameras, guns, etc…

    those people should be arrested.

  10. Prayers are with the people in NO. This is so sad and I feel very helpless right now!

  11. Laura Lord Belle

Well, God only knows what I would take if I were in the same situation..easy to judge from where we are…People get irrational in these tense /uncertain moments…..

    I wish them well………….

  12. Lisa

Seriously, what the hell are they going to do with a plasma TV in a flooded area with no hopes of electricity for months?

Planning a new series called, “Pimp My Raft.”

  13. Coco

I’ve been donating….yes…I’ve been giving my donations to the freakin GAS STATIONS that are charging me $3.35 a gallon!!!

  14. Crystal

If we weren’t spending billions of dollars destroying other countries there would be plenty of money for the effort.

I love how Bush gives Daddy and Clinton the responsiblity of organizing the relief effort. I guess he got his tragedy fill with 9/11…

  15. 510Bombshell

ella: $3.37 for regular in Oakland, CA.

as for the few people who are ruining it for everyone with the unecessary looting, they will get what they deserve, & no it isn’t 7 new pairs of Jordans or 5 DVD players or a gold chain.
I’m praying for all the good people that have lost their homes, loved ones, lives. the rest can burn.

  16. Mary Anne

As a New Orleanian, I appreciate the link to donate. It’s devastating and we need the nation’s support in getting everything back together!
    Thanks again!
    Mary Anne

  17. Thank you so much for the link up for help. Nothing here will ever be the same and fabulous New Orleans will never be what it was, but it’s the people that so desparately need help in this humanitarian crisis

  18. cj21

George W. Bush and FEMA are doing too little too late – hundreds, maybe thousands, have died instead of being saved. People are literally dying on the street thanks to no food, water or shelter. Obviously the Fed Government can’t or won’t take care of this situation, so thank you for putting up the links and encouraging ordinary citizens to help out. We can get through this together.

  19. Sally

This is really sad. I live in Australia and have seen people in cities like New Orleans homeless and desprate, walking the streets. Thoughts and prayers to everyone over there.
