The Judy Garland biopic IS happening, according to Anne Hathaway. It’s just slow-moving due to the sensitivity of the matter.
Hathaway was tapped last year to play the Hollywood legend in a film based on the 2001 book by Gerald Clarke entitled Get Happy: The Life Of Judy Garland. Hathaway explained to BBC Radio Four’s Front Row that there are so many stories out there about Garland, so the forces that be are trying to find the best way to pay her tribute. “It’s a very sensitive project and there have been so many stories told about her life that we’re really trying to get it right,” she told the radio show. “So we’re taking our time with it. I know it seems like it’s sort of an endless process but it’s very, very slow incremental steps. I had a meeting about it a couple of weeks ago and we’re all very motivated.”
Hathaway will also sing in the film, although she’s frightened at what the fans might think. “I certainly don’t sing like Judy Garland but the talk is to have me do the singing. But I think people might cry murder if they don’t get to hear Judy’s beloved voice so the talk is for me to sing but I don’t know if that’s exactly what will happen.” I recall Hathaway singing at the 2009 Academy Awards, and I thought she sounded delightful. It is a challenge to sound like Garland, since her voice was so unique. I think Hathaway could do it.
Production for the film is scheduled to begin in 2012.
