‘The Book Of Morman’ Wins Big, Neil Patrick Harris Shines At 2011 Tony Awards [PHOTOS]

June 13th, 2011 // 2 Comments

The hilariously profane The Book of Mormon reigned supreme at the 2011 Tony Awards, bring home nine trophies, including best musical, for its offensive yet good-natured look at two missionaries who arrive in Uganda and get way more than they bargained for, including gun-toting warlords, whole villages infected with HIV and a running gag about maggots in a man’s scrotum.

War Horse, a World War I tale about horses told with wonderful puppetry, won five Tonys, including best play. The revival of Larry Kramer’s groundbreaking AIDS play The Normal Heart won three, as did the revival of Cole Porter‘s Anything Goes, with the terrific Sutton Foster, who won best actress in a musical. The full list of winners is after the jump.

Neil Patrick Harris began the show with a song about how Broadway isn’t just for gay people any more. The number featured a bevy of dancing nuns, sailors, flight attendants and Mormons: “Attention every breeder, you’re invited to the theater!” he sang. Neil closed the show with an amazing recap rap.

Lots of pics from the show and from the 2011 Awards Tony red carpet are in the gallery, and check out the wonderful Hugh Jackman and Neil Patrick Harris Tony’s face-off video…
