The Avengers for the win! The jam-packed superhero flick pulled in $200.3 million domestically opening weekend, beating out Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2′s $169.2 last summer, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Avengers opened a week ago overseas, earning a whopping $441.5 million through Sunday. The pic’s worldwide total of $641.8 million has already surpassed the lifetime totals of Captain America: The First Avenger ($364 million), Thor ($449 million), Iron Man ($585 million) and Iron Man 2 ($624 million).
Whuck! This is a much-needed financial boost for Disney, which lost about $200 million at the box office with John Carter (I still love you, Tim Riggins).
This is the first Marvel film released by Disney since the mouse company purchased the comic giant. Paramount distributed Marvel’s previous films and will receive hefty distribution fees for The Avengers and next summer’s Iron Man 3.
I saw someone in the subway dressed as Loki this past weekend and didn’t bat an eye. Instead, I compared him to Tom Hiddleston. Jeremy Renner, meanwhile, grabbed a late breakfast last Thursday (May 3rd) in Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Times reports that Renner revealed that he may play Scarlett Johansson‘s husband in Cat On a Hot Tin Roof on Broadway.
