Taylor Lautner Not Starring In ‘New Moon’

December 10th, 2008 // 255 Comments

The hectic pace planned for filming the next two Twilight sequels might have played a larger role in director Catherine Hardwicke‘s decision not to work on the film’s follow-up New Moon.

According to sources that talked with Entertainment Weekly, the fast-paced schedule for production which begins with pre-production on Dec. 15 in Vancouver, was a big turn-off for the director. “She’d love to do the sequel if she could do it better than Twilight,” the spy said.

In addition, the role of Jacob is now up for grabs as Taylor Lautner will not be reprising it in the sequel. Summit Entertainment deemed him too young-looking and slight of frame to play the maturing werewolf.

So now, the hunt for a Native American young man who fits the description of Jacob Black AND who demonstrates incredible chemistry with Kristen Bell is on.

That should be easy. While they’re at it, why don’t they fetch me a unicorn and a the other half of this golden amulet?

    awww that’s sad.

I think either Noah Watts or David Midthunder would be good, especially Noah. Hes the right age and has an edgy look to him….

  3. mowgli

thats good i guess… actually when it comes to casting decisions made by Catherine, the only characters/actors she got right was Rob and Kristen… the rest was way off… hopefully this new director will make better decisions…

  4. Yzzy

    Kristen Stewart, not Bell.

  5. anon

They should have thought through the whole story before they cast him to begin with!! With all of the things they can do in Hollywood these days, making this kid look a little bit bigger shouldn’t be a problem. I hate when they switch actors. Although, I’d like to see them take Kristen out. Sorry, but her facial expression was the same throughout the whole entire movie!! Bella was never afraid of Edward and yet she looked terrified the whole entire time??!!

  6. Sallie

…I doubt this is accurate since they got Kristen Stewarts name wrong. So I wouldn’t be getting upset anytime soon.

  7. AshliCalifornia

I hope this is true. He was my most despised casting decision.

  8. E.

Could they have maybe planned for the possibility of sequels when they cast the first movie? The whole thing is starting to feel like a dress-rehearsal.

Since they’re replacing everyone, maybe they can get a new actress for KStew’s part. Someone who, like, has functioning brain waves.

  9. AshliCalifornia

I hope this is true. He was my most despised casting decision. Right after Nikki Reed as Rosalie, who’s been in almost everything Catherine Hardwicke’s ever directed. Maybe that will change too.

  10. Marii

..I think its stupid to change an actor now and Taylor Lautner is perfect for the part and Nikki Reed is awsome as Rosalie BTW

  11. An

What?! I actually liked that actor. He was very cute and showed great attraction to K. Plus, I thought his body was fine. What are they looking for – an 80s-era Hulk Hogan?

  12. AJ

HELLO, there is an easy fix for this. You think all of those guys in 300 were naturally big and buff? Just pump him full of protein and work him out a little, and it’ll be fine.

But I fully support Rosalie’s replacement. You know, with at least a real blonde.

And Kristen Bell even would be better than Stewart. I can’t stand her.

  13. Jamie

Um, there is no confirmation at all that TL is being replaced. I hope he is because he was terrible and is all wrong for the role, but they said right in the article that the new director will make that decision.

And it’s Kristen Stewart, not Kristen Bell. One of them is an up and coming teenage actress, the other is a pushing 30 actress still trying to pass for 21.

  14. milky

    this is awesome.

lautner was too tiny to play a nearly 7 ft werewolf, not nearly rugged enough. he supposedly grows a foot between twilight and new moon. his made out of putty nose was very distracting, and wouldn’t make for any good close-ups, either.

these changes are awesome. hardwicke’s film was poorly directed, with all the corded “flying”. so much of it was cringe-worthy via her interpretation. the line “and so the lion fell in love with the lamb” was supposed to have a sarcastic tone, with “what a stupid lamb” as a snickered response, NOT the schmoopy scene she gave us. edward’s sun-exposed, sparkling skin was NOT supposed to make a tinkerbell noise.

this is all looking good for a turn-around from that cw production angle.

  15. ilis

could you please at least write Kristen’s name right? Is Kristen Stewart, not Bell…

  16. gia

i kind of enjoyed the first movie, but it was majorly flawed, it could have been so much better & that makes me sad…
overall bad casting except for edward & alice. i think emma watson from the harry potter movies would have made an excellent bella. taylor was okay for the first one…he had a boyish charm, but next time he needs to be more masculine & its an obvious difference, so its okay to recast. i agree with milky…i was annoyed with the cheesy flying, inaccurate line interpretation & edwards sparkling fairy skin.
i hope the next director steps up & makes the sequel much better than the first.

  17. Dude!

It’s Kristen Stewart. Not Bell. Learn the names before posting the story at least.

  18. Katie

I wish they would get rid of Kristen Stewart… she had the same weird twitchy facial expression through the whole film… she was probably stoned the whole time.
Taylor just isn’t right for the part of a 7 foot warewolf. Rosalie was deifnitely NOT the most gorgeous vampire ever… Alice, Edward, Charlie, Carlise, and Esme were the only people they got right. Everyone else can go!
Lets see if they actually put money in this film. Twilight was so cheaply done you could see the pull from the zipcords on Edward and Bella’s clothes! Get it right this time!

  19. Amy

Is it beyond ridiculous that they could use camera angles and special effects to make him appear 6ft 7? I mean, he has a brilliant body and I personally think lookswise he is a perfect casting for Jacob. Hot, but not so stunning that you’d leave Edward.

  20. Sadie

If they’re going to make this change maybe they can start over and find actors that can really act and that are actually beautiful. The only characters they got right were Charlie and Billy. I could see the make up on Carlisle and Rosalie throughout the entire film.

  21. Lianne

Just because they got Kristen Stewart’s name wrong doesn’t mean you have to insult Kristen Bell. She is majorly talented, definitely more so than Stewart. As for Taylor Lautner, hes not hot and does look too scrawny to play Jacob.

  22. angy e

    um
you CANNOT just change an actor in the middle of a phenomenon like this.

    the kid is 16.
by the time he hits 17, he’ll look different.
    aka, he’s growing.
dude, look at the actors in harry potter? they look different in every one of their films.

you wouldn’t change draco malfoy or ron weasley. that’s the status of jacob at this point! you would not just be like ‘sorry tom felton, you aren’t draco anymore’ or ‘sorry rupert grint, i’ll show you the door’.

    1) um, there’s posters of this kid everywhere. he was already in the film.
    2) he’s beautiful. he’s prettier than edward!
    3) he’s a national ranking martial artist. WHAT MORE COULD YOU ASK FOR FROM A WOLF? have you seen his abs? i’m pretty sure that’d distract from his height and weight.
    4) did anyone notice when he’d told hardwicke that he’d already gained 15 lb? he’s working on gaining the weight. (i’m sure it’s muscle, too).
    5) you really just cannot change an actor.
    6) but taylor is so pretty :( i don’t even care that he’s 2 years younger than me :(.
    7) his 10 minutes of acting was 15x better than kristen stewart’s. if you’re going to replace anyone, it should be her. she looked stupid.
    8) i swear, i’m going to pee all over summit if this is true.

  23. angy e

    lmfao
    oh and btw
if you want a new actor
    who is older
how about brandon baker from ‘JOHNNY TSUNAMI’
    LOLOLO!!
no one will be able to tell the difference between hawwaiin and native american
    shuuuuucks
    hahahah
screw this noah watts – he just looks like a popstar
and this midthunder guy – wtf the native american hulk? he looks like he’s 40!

  24. stolidog

    Young & slim = Gay.

Just ask Chace Crawford and Zac Efron.

  25. Katie

    Kristen Belle?

    You mean Kristen Stewart.

It sounds like you summarized the EW article, except you took the possibility of Taylor not returning as fact just to be sensational.

  26. kylie,

kristan bell, lmfao that’s so funny.
k uh, first of all ..you shouldn’t switch a freaking actor just cause they aren’t big enough or whatever, if that’s really the problem then they can edit it. to hire a new actor to play jacob is just going to make the movie stupid, and confusing. nobody is going to want to see it.
and second, taylor lautner resembles everything that the book says, it’s the perfect part for him.
if taylor lautner doesn’t play jacob, then i’m not going to see it.
& i’m sure others won’t want too either.

  27. anis

    i call bs

  28. Yuval Manor

that information isnt right, summit said that they’re waiting for a director to be chosen, then he/she will reevaluate ALL the characters. and no one can play jacob better than taylor lautner:)

  29. Michelle

    I’m done with this series.

First of all, this is stupid as hell that they’re changing actors, and JACOB AND BELLA did NOT HAVE “INCREDIBLE CHEMISTRY!!!!” Summit is going to ruin the series. They’re going to ruin Edward and Bella. I’m getting out while I can!!

  30. Rina Cullen

    Steven Strait. :]

  31. Steph

    Its kristen STEWART….
    not kristen bell ¬¬

    wth.

  32. catie

I’ve read the series enough times to have the characters down pat. Taylor IS JACOB BLACK!! honestly rob and kristen made a very bad Bella and Edward. and Rosalie wasn’t quite in character either. Don’t get me wrong the movie was awesome and rob and kristen have great chemistry but they really sacrificed the actual characters of edward and bella. what a shame…. but TAYLOR IS JACOB!!!

  33. eyeroll

    Kristen STEWART, not Bell.

  34. Lyd

    1.) It’s Kristin STEWART
2.) If it isn’t going to be Taylor, let it be Steven Strait.

3.) Summit, grip thyself and feel your cajones! Do not let your own personal gain castrate your potential with this series. If you alienate your supporters, you WILL fail. Have you not learned yet that WE ARE THE FANS, The money you made was our Roar!!! If you don’t come through with New Moon, the small dollars you receive will be the whimper you deserve.

We are a collective and we will decimate you if we choose to.

    Ok, power trip over.

  35. Slvrdlphn

Kristen BELL? Don’t you mean Kristen STEWART?

  36. HVA

This is so gay. They should jsut keep Taylor, he actually looks like how Jacob should look.
I do agree that he does look to boyish right now, but like honestly hollywood can do a lot of stuff, they can make him look less boyish.. and he is a growing boy lol. He can work out and gain weight.

Oh and btww. I love Niki Reed I think she’s gorgeous and I support the decision of her as Rosalie, BUT I thought they could have done a better job with her looks in the movie. She wasn’t portrayed as beautiful as she could have been…

  37. HVA

actually i also think kristen stewart (not kristen bell LOL) was a good casting choice for bella.. cause bella is supposed to be just like average… and kristen kinda looks like an average girl in the movie.
I think shes a good actress, just the script was off at some parts and she had to portray bella a certain way that shouldn’t have been portrayed. (the cheesy lines/looking scared then saying shes not etc)

BUT NO ONE SHOULD BE REPLACED. thats just stupid. I HATE when shows/movies change characters like in the middle of the series.
Imagine if Ron was changed in Harry Potter cause he wasn’t tall enough. ugh.

  38. Ashley

    Dear Summit

Thanks for already ruining New Moon for all of you greedy… im not even going to finish that sentence.

  39. Kat

I hope they replace Lautner. The only character I genuinely liked in those dopey books was Jacob. He’s supposed to be tall and buff and good-looking and a bad boy. Not some girlie kid who looks like he belongs in a Disney musical.

Also, it makes sense for them to replace him anyway since his looks change so dramatically in New Moon.

  40. JedMeister

    Taylor who??

    STEVEN STRAIT AS JACOB BLACK!

    now that’s a whole lot better… lol

  41. Ncha

I was really confused by ‘Bell’ instead of Stewart.

But even moreso I want to know form where they think they can procur this YOUNG native actor who is astoundingly tall and rugged.

He’s about as good as they’re going to get, frankly.

  42. esther.

Oh for God’s sake. This is stupid. Taylor was actually good as Jacob! He actually looks like the guy for one. And he’s so enthusiastic about the entire thing, and in interviews and stuff, he basically _is_ the Jacob Bella (and the rest of us) know and love.

Replacing Hardwicke was one thing, kicking out good actors for no good reason other than the fact they want to scrimp on a budget just gets on my nerves. Can we concentrate on giving the fans a good movie here?

  43. shoooo

    it’s STEWART you idiot.

  44. Kelly

Charlie stole that movie. Alice was perfect. Belle was the most horrible choice. Everyone else, I could take them or leave them.

  45. AppleSauce

Well, I can understand them getting rid of him. They’re on a tight budget (50 million isn’t a lot), and he’s really short. he’s 5’9”. he’s supposed to be 6’7” in the book. That’s way too much of a difference to notice. And the studio did plan this, they didn’t have him sign a 3 year contract like the others.

But I do wish Stewart would be boot, she’s a bad actress.

  46. Christian Koons

How could they do that? I mean I know how, but why? He was so good and very cute, exactly as I pictured Jacob. The next one will just be that much more disappointing. I really hope they find what they are looking for.

  47. A

uh… first off it’s Kristen STEWART!!! duh… anyway, I personally didn’t like the choice of taylor lautner as jacob black but i think it’s really stupid to replace an actor for the next movie… and Kristen Stewart is a good actress and she’s a perfect bella, in my opinion… but i don’t think this is true…

  48. caroline

why would you want to change taylor?
you cant just change the characters in the middle of a series. thats just rediculous. it would ruin the whole movie!!!!!!!

  49. P

    TAYLOR IS JACOB!!
    U COULD NOT CHANGE HIM!!!

    AND IS STEWART!! NOT BELL!!

    THIS SUCKS!!

  50. Jenny.

    They got Kristen’s surname wrong.
If they’re replacing Taylor, I refuse to watch it.
