Taylor Swift is notoriously known for her public relationship inspired lyrics. Granted, plenty of musicians are fueled by bad breakups (from Frank Sinatra, ahem “I’m a Fool to Want You” was inspired by Ava Gardner, to Justin Timberlake, “Cry Me A River” alluded to his Britney Spears days). But has Taylor taken it too far? Has it become the same lyrics but with a fairly different chord progression?
In an interview with Rollingstone, John Mayer seems to think she took it too far saying “I will say as a songwriter that I think it’s kind of cheap songwriting. I know she’s the biggest thing in the world, and I’m not trying to sink anybody’s ship, but I think it’s abusing your talent to rub your hands together and go, ‘Wait till he gets a load of this!’ That’s bullshit.”
That being said, Taylor has done quite well for herself with 107 awards associated to her name. Taylor Swift is constantly a crowd favorite because of her identifiable lyrics. You can try to deny it but we all have our faceless Romeos and Juliets (these kind of fantasies tend to creep up on you, unwillingly).
You can love her or hate her but one thing is for certain, she gave a clear and fair warning to all her future boyfriends. In regards to her past relationships, let’s take a trip down memory lane and look at past breakups (and songs that coincide). Launch the gallery and check them out!
