Tavi Gevinson On How She ‘Figured Out’ Fashion

For awhile, you couldn’t talk about fashion without Tavi Gevinson‘s name coming up somewhere. I’ve been a fan of hers for years for many reasons, including my admiration over how industrious she is. I mean, she’s 15! I don’t know what you were doing at 15, but I wasn’t being invited to New York Fashion Week, that’s for sure.

If you’re a little tardy to the party, Gevinson shot to fame with her blog called Fashion Rookie before going on to create her online publication, Rookie, where she acts as its editor-in-chief. While life seems like it’s quieted down some since the initial fervor over her fashionable presence, she’s still making waves– just different ones.

In a recent interview, Gevinson addressed the reactions to her then 13-year old self at NY Fashion Week:

People were confused about my being there for a few reasons. One was that I was a blogger. The word itself, blog — it’s kind of an ugly word. It doesn’t really sound very legitimate, and fashion as an industry has been really behind on being online. And so I think people were confused and angry that someone younger than them had kind of figured it out.

Well, when you’ve got it, you’ve got it.
