Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow and Kate Hudson stepped out at last night’s Costume Institute Gala wearing designs from friend (and the event’s co-chair) Stella McCartney. Madge wore a short-sleeved ice blue silk gown adorned with flowers, while Gwynie and a pregnant Hudson opted for a sunnier look. Paltrow, per usual, appeared flawless in a backless beaded number with a side slit. Hudson topped her jewel-encrusted dress off with some sort of a sun-shaped headpiece (a brooch, perhaps?).
Even though the night was dedicated to the late Alexander McQueen, McCartney’s designs occupied the red carpet. Each outfit, with the exception of Iman, received several gold stars from SOCIALITE LIFE. While a jumpsuit is usually a great throwback to the glory days of Studio 54 (and who better than Iman to remind us of yesteryear), the model’s look last night just didn’t work. Both the neckline and color left a bad taste in my mouth. No gold stars for Iman.
I’d like to ignore Rihanna‘s Rapunzel braid and focus on her black lace dress, complemented nicely by plum lips. Other McCartney winners were Naomi Watts, Eva Mendes and Maggie Gyllenhaal. Mendes sported an especially resplendent one-shoulder dress, which scored points if only for the royal blue color.
