In a “Are you kidding me?” moment this morning, it seems the man that played Borat is going to play the lead singer of Queen in an upcoming biopic.
Sacha Baron Cohen has closed a deal to play Freddie Mercury in a film that’s being scripted by Peter Morgan for a 2011 production start. The untitled film will be financed by GK Films partners Graham King and Tim Headington, who’ll produce in partnership with Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal‘s Tribeca Productions, and Queen Films which was formed by the surviving members of Queen to be part of the production team.
The script is said to be focused on the band’s formative years, leading up to the famous performance at Live Aid in 1985. The biggest questions still remains: will Cohen sing or will they use Mercury’s vocals?
He is a dead-ringer, that’s for sure. But usually I think of Cohen as a comedy, character actor…but maybe that’s his best trait for taking on such an iconic role?
