Lashauwn Beyond

This week’s featured “queen-testant”, Lashauwn Beyond, first attracted our eye delivering Mad Max realness in the first “Rupocaylpse” challenge. He also immortalized the best Drag Race quote of the season, “This is not RuPaul‘s best friend race!” on Untucked. Sadly, this fierce Florida fox left us far too soon, losing a Lip Sync for Your Life to The Princess on the show’s second episode. Before the season began, we got to chat with Lashauwn about his inspirations, influences and his (all-too-brief) time on Drag Race.

Socialite Life: Tell me a little bit about yourself.
Lashauwn Beyond: I’m 22 years old born and raised in Ft Lauderdale, Florida. I grew up with two brothers and two sisters. I enjoy traveling, shopping and art! Making costumes is my passion…I love to challenge my creativity and push myself to do something different every time I come up with a new look for me or whoever I’m sewing for. I love to have fun and enjoy life but I can be a  very serious individual at times. Priorities always come first for me. Living comfortably means a lot…I believe that hard work pays off and nothing in this world is free.

Don’t sashay away yet – we’ve got more from Lashauwn after the jump!

SL: How did you get started in drag?
Lashauwn: My first time in drag was Halloween, 2008! LOL! Wow…looking back on that night I was a hot mess! Then, shortly after, I started competing in local competitions. Drag gave me an outlet to express myself…so I fell in love.

SL: Who are your biggest influences or inspirations?
Lashauwn: My family is my inspiration…I’m blessed to have an accepting family, a pack of non-judgmental people that truly love me for me. They inspire me to want to be, and do as much as I can with my life, to make them as proud of me as I am of them.

SL: How would you describe your look?
Lashauwn: Creative, futuristic, big and beyond…

SL: What do you enjoy most about performing?
Lashauwn: I enjoy the looks on the people’s faces in the audience when they see the bizarre costumes…I love the smiles on their faces. (It) makes me feel good that they are enjoying my performance.

SL: Where is your favorite place to perform?
Lashauwn: In South Beach, Miami at the Palace Bar. I love it because it’s outside. Everybody gets a chance to see the show that walks by, so that gives us more people to entertain! Also, the fact that it’s outside allows me to do what I want to do such as light(ing) the floor on fire, setting off fireworks, smoke grenades, etc. – LOL – and no one gets hurt or no fire alarms go off!

SL: What can people expect to see when they come see you perform?
Lashauwn: They can expect to see something new…something out of the ordinary….I put so much into my performances to make sure that the audience is pleased!

SL: Have you ever had an embarrassing moment on stage?
Lashauwn: Yes! While performing at the Palace…strong winds and 2 foot headwear just seem not to mix well with one another! I was performing on Halloween last year and my cemetery headpiece had broken in half and fell off of my head! Ugh, talk about embarrassing!

SL: What do you think separates you from the other queens?
Lashauwn: I do what I want to do as far as the way I perform and the costumes that I wear. I’m not afraid to be myself…I’m not a follower.

SL: Do you think your “day job” working in the pageant industry has helped you up your game as a drag performer?
Lashauwn: Yes, of course, because I am a reflection of my day job…I am my own model, so I must make sure at all times that I look good!

SL: What was it like working with RuPaul?
Lashauwn: She’s an amazing person and it was always so hard to believe that I was having a conversation with someone who means so much to me and the gay community.

SL: What was it like working with the other queens?
Lashauwn: Tough! Learning and dealing with 12 other queens’ personalities was definitely something new for me. Everybody wants to win and it’s hard to compete against friends!

SL: What would people be surprised to know about you?
Lashauwn: That I can get loud when I have to. Everyone seems to meet me and think that I’m so quiet and innocent…sometimes mistaking my kindness for weakness.

SL: What do you hope people will learn about you from the show?
Lashauwn: I hope people will see that I’m most definitely different from the other queens and that I’m a work in progress.

SL: What song would be your dream song to “lip sync for your life”?
Lashauwn: Beyoncé‘s “Radio”! That is my favorite song to perform!

SL: What words of wisdom do you live by?
Lashauwn: With stress comes success.

SL: What one beauty item can you not live without?
Lashauwn: Eyelashes!

SL: What are you hoping to gain from your experience on the show?
Lashauwn: To have the opportunity to continue to show the world something new…the opportunity to travel, meet new people and make people smile because they are either inspired by me or simply because they enjoyed a performance or liked a costume that I may have made….

SL: How can your fans best stay in touch with you?
Lashauwn: Facebook! I’m on there 24/7.

Who will be the next queen to sashay away? Find out on an all-new episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race, tonight at 9pm EST on Logo! Catch up with any missed episodes and exclusive clips at LogoTV.com.
