Wrangle ‘em up, movie lovers! Everyone who held back as to not compete with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2 and Captain America: The First Avenger… is still holding back. All three films releasing this weekend manage to stay away from magic and comics, but expect Cowboys & Aliens to hog tie the competition and be the main competitor against the two heavy weights.
Considering Cowboys & Aliens is based on a little known novel, it sure has an all star cast including the newly married Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford and the newly single Olivia Wilde. The premiere was a serious red carpet of pretty people, no wonder it made our Top 10 Hot Summer Movies list! This film comes the closest to last two box office winners being in the science-fiction western category (really, is that even a category?) while The Smurfs and Crazy, Stupid, Love aim in the opposite direction.
Although The Smurfs hopes to reach the same audience as Alvin & The Chipmunks with the 3-D live-action/computer animated hybrid (still not sure what that target demographic is), something tells me casting Katy Perry and including an upskirt joke was a fantastic publicity ploy that the Los Angeles Times anticipates will land them $30 million at the box office this weekend. Way to rely on your ASSets, Katy!
But what we hope to see succeed is Crazy, Stupid, Love, because we crazy, stupid, love Ryan Gosling – ok bad joke, but it’s funny because it’s true. No surprise, the ladies will flock to see the film also starring Steve Carrell, Julianne Moore and Emma Stone in the romantic comedy about finding one’s soul mate. Think Valentine’s Day and He’s Not That Into You on the connection between characters. And if you love rom com’s, we just found your perfect match in a movie!
