Review: Zooey Deschanel Is Adorbs In Fox’s ‘New Girl’
Last night we headed over to the Hollywood Roosevelt to catch a sneak peek of Fox’s New Girl, starring Zooey Deschanel. After noshing on some apps and chasing a glass of vino with a bottle of Vitamin Water, we sat down to watch the premiere episode. I should preface this by saying that my expectations were low, as they are for all series premieres. 2 Broke Girls? Doesn’t look very funny. Whitney? Methinks it’s humor can stretch as long as one episode. I was equally as pessimistic about New Girl, given the grand tradition of disappointing pilots.
I was wrong. New Girl was very entertaining and very well-written. Damon Wayans, Jr.? My new favorite sitcom star. Alas, he’ll only be in one episode of the Fox series, since he’s committed to ABC’s Happy Endings (which, BTW, is a kneeslapper). Deschanel stars as Jess, that chick from your drama class in high school that turned every third sentence into a song. And yet, she’s as cute as a button and very likable. She comes home (in nothing but a trench coat) to surprise her live-in boyfriend, who has been sleeping with someone else. Obvious problem notwithstanding, Jess is the one who has to find a new place to live. Bless her heart, for Jess trolls Craigslist for the first available “Roommates Seeking Roommate” listing.
Without giving too much away, just prepare yourselves for a really pleasant series premiere. The formula may be one that’s been used before, but New Girl is a gem worth programming on the DVR. Catch the premiere on Tuesday, September 20th @ 9/8 central.
