Rapper M.I.A. To Lady Gaga: You’re Not As Weird As You Think You Are

April 9th, 2010 // 39 Comments

Sri Lankan rapper M.I.A. dished it out to Lady Gaga with a heaping helping of sass in an interview with NME. M.I.A. references Gaga at least three times, blasting the singer about her image and her influence on pop music. The highlights?

M.I.A. thinks Gaga, pictured in Sydney on April 6, is deluded about her avant-garde persona.

“None of her music’s reflective
of how weird she wants to be or thinks she is,” the rapper said. “She models herself on
Grace Jones and Madonna, but the music sounds like 20-year-old Ibiza
music, you know? She’s not progressive, but she’s a good mimic.” Burnnnn.

But don’t worry, M.I.A., pictured at an H&M event on Nov. 2, 2009, has some backhanded compliments to slap out too!

“She
sounds more like me than I fucking do! That’s a talent and she’s got a
great team behind her, but she’s the industry last’s stab at making
itself important – saying, ‘You need our money behind you, the
endorsements, the stadiums’ Respect to her, she’s keeping a hundred
thousand people in work, but my belief is: Do It Yourself.” I take it M.I.A. is not a Haus of Gaga fan…

But she’s not finished! When asked if we need record labels anymore, she snarks: “Are they even interested in making money from music anymore? Lady Gaga
plugs 15 things
in her new video. Dude, she even plugs a burger!” Um, I kind of thought that was the point

More you say? How important are visuals to M.I.A’s music? ” Very. But it’s not like “Haus of Gaga” (laughs). Me blindfolded with naked men feeding me apples and shit.”

The winner of this little feud? Gaga. You never see Gaga talking shit about other ladies. And second, the pop superstar has made it very clear that part of her persona/image/plan for world domination is being a successful, commercial pop artist (so yes, a mimic). Maybe Gaga is just too meta for you, M.I.A., but even if you don’t get it, don’t bring a sister down.

Well I just lost all my respect for MIA, what kind of bitch brings up another singer 3 times in an interview without even being asked about her. I hate snarky rude people in general, and I sense a bit of jealousy here. Say what you will about Lady Gaga but she’s never negative towards anyone, ever. Fuck you MIA.

  2. Andrew

Douglas, why lose all of your respect for a singer just because somebody mentions another one without being asked. Plus, M.I.A. said that “she wasn’t as weird as she thought she was”, meaning she doesn’t think Gaga’s eccentric.

  3. De'Jaye

Hell I agree with you i belive that M.I.A. is only hater because “Lady Gaga”, has her iiiish together. I believe that LadyGaga Is the most talented weird person there is in the Music Business, right now. I feel that M.I.A. Is Talented to but she needs to worry about her own, and she too can share some of the fame as well as Lady Gaga. But she would never be as eccentric As Lady Gaga is…

Thanks if you have any comments on what i had to say.

m.i.a. sucks and gaga does a good madge impression.
i’ve always had a soft spot when someone at a drag show performs madonna. that must explain why i’m on team gaga.

  5. Fergal

I dont get why artist have to talk shit about Gaga just because she doing well and about the way she does things?

    m.i.a is shit anyway

  6. Shoshanna

Uhh…who the F is MIA? Who cares what she says about anyone?

  7. ladygagakindasucks

i am so fucking glad someone with a voice said it. THANKS MIA. THANK YOU. I LOVE YOU LIKE I DID 5 YEARS AGO AGAIN BECAUSE OF THIS. MIA is far more original unique and talented than lady gaga

  8. agreed

MIA is right. I’m glad to finally hear it explicitly stated in the press. And from MIA…it’s a relief.

  9. THe VOICE

The Only thing she (MIA) said is the truth
It hurt’s but is better know it , LADY GAGA IS A BRAND she’s not an ARTIST less an ICON …

  10. Specator

Lady Gaga is doing her thing, making music and making money. People like MIA who isn’t being “backed” or have any type of people skills/etiquette/PR training always has something to say negative which ends up affecting them (their brand). It’s no wonder you have MIA and other like them become one hit wonders or nowadays a few hit then go broke wonders. The way I figure it, if you got what it takes (talent) and you line your cards and people around you right, and keep your damn (foul mouth in most cases) shut, you will get ahead and be noted for your talent and contributions positively rather than your idiodic rants!

  13. millz

yeah MIA how many hit singles have you had in the past year or so? i can only think of one! tell me how progressive does that sound? Lady Gaga is on her grind. Talking out the mouth just for attention , how bout you get back in the studio an start making some music , cause from what i hear you aint doing shit!

  14. Lorene

I agree with Shoshanna and Millz.

    FUCK MIA.

  15. Kindra

Idk who MIA is. Haha. But uh, FUCK HER! Go Gaga. =)

  16. Kindra

I dont even know who the fuck this MIA bitch is. Only thing i wanna say is FUCK YOU MIA!!! Tryna start shit just so u can get a lil bit of fame. Ha! FUCK YOU! Go GAGA!!! =)

  17. gagarox!

personally gaga is better no one really knows MIA………………… and if you do its only for one song about her getting high like planes. dont get me wrong i love that song but MIA needs to watch out gaga will win this!!……………… who knew about MIA?? i dont even think she has other songs besides paper planes when i can list alot of lady gaga songs out of the top of my head. in my opinion MIA is jealous. why else would she say that and that shark shirt thing would look better on gaga………..

  18. The 2nd Gaga

Gaga is in the record books ppl. For her 6 new #1 singles. For her videos being veiwed more than any other online. For her creativity. For just being herself. She is a role model foe so many. MIA is a bad influence… I smoke too but I rather support Gaga than this fuckin tlkin hatin shit bitch MIA. Dont be jealous girl cuz u cant write any new good songs like Gaga. Ha! Dueces MIA! (and whomever else that be hatin.)

  19. daphne

I wouldn’t put much credence on what MIA is blabbing about. MIA has not won any Grammy. GaGa on the other hand has won 2. MIA is a one hit wonder while GaGa has six #1 singles. Plus that b!tch MIA is a hypocrite. She slams the product placements on GaGa’s video, while she has plugged iPod and Pineapple express on her vids. B!tch is just a whiny jealous has-been.

  20. Rory

M.I.A ISNT A ONE HIT WONDER CAUSE SHE HASNT RELEASED ANYTHING IN THE US SINCE PAPER PLANES!!! SHE WASNT OFFENDING, JUST BEING HONEST ABOUT HOW SHE FEELS!!! PEOPLE COMMENTING HERE HAVE OVER-REACTED AND SHOCKED ME WITH HATE AND ABUSE TOWARDS AN ONLY DEVELOPING STAR (M.I.A)

  21. Blah Etc...

Only thing I gotta say is; M.I.A actually had an interview? Wow. BORING!!!
    P.S. I love Lady Gaga.

  22. BJ Connolly

This world makes me sad why do all the great legends of the entertainment industry get picked on like Elvis and Michael Jackson where and now GaGa is getting picked on only because shes better than everyone else its soo sad!!!! i love GaGa the world needs more ppl like her and needs to exclude jealous bitches like M.I.A.

  23. Roychelle

in my opinion, M.I.A is fucking stupid. gaga already explained why she advertised so many things in “telephone” and that was to symbolize the advertising this world consists of along with things constantly being shoved down her throat. you do not have to be modern in order to be progressive. gaga can very well start a revolution with 80′s and 90′s styled music.if M.I.A is willing to fucking produce herself, then she shouldnt be surprised about how far gaga has gotten nor complaining. realistically, work is better with people behind you. if you’re running a business, you’re going to hire people, right? you wouldnt be as successful if you were to run the complete corporation.

  24. Roychelle

oops. i meant she had so many advertisements in the video to symbolize the things that are being shoved down OUR throats.as a whole.as a world.

  25. Jagger

Most of the posers above are prime examples of what’s wrong with music fans today and the music industry in general. People like you lot don’t care about real talent or creativity, but all you lot care about is superficial things like how many records an artist sells, how high they get on the charts, or how many awards they win. In other words, the only thing that matters to people like you is superficial popularity. No wonder music fans are seen today as nothing more than superficial sheep herd!

MIA (an underground artist) may not be as popular or “mainstream” as Lady Gaga, but MIA’s music certainly has far more creativity, originality, deep meaning and artistic talent than the likes of Gaga could ever hope to achieve! Gaga is nothing more than a superficial mainstream product imitating the same old kind of trashy music we’ve been listening to for years with no other purpose than for nightclub entertainment. On the other hand, MIA is an underground artist with real artistic talent and her own identity, creating experimental music that is entirely her own and using her music as a form of artistic expression. She travels across Asia and Africa to find rare tribal beats to incorporate into her music, creating original music that is uniquely her own. She writes, sings and produces her own music as well, instead of relying on producers to do it for her, unlike Gaga. And MIA uses her music to make meaningful social and political statements about society and world politics. Whereas Gaga’s music is nothing more than mere entertainment, MIA’s music rises above mere entertainment into the realm of real artistic expression.

Also, did I mention that Time Magazine listed MIA as one of the 100 most influential people in the world? That’s certainly a very impressive achievement for a non-mainstream underground artist. I’m not surprised either, as a number of mainstream American artists were already influenced by MIA long before she even became well-known in the US. It’s quite impressive in itself that an underground artist like MIA (without any backing) was able to have a profound influence on mainstream American artists like Rihanna, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, and even Lady Gaga. And this was even before MIA became known in the US. In addition, her influence extends well beyond the music industry into the realm of politics, with her music frequently causing political controversy, especially in Sri Lanka, and more recently even in America with her “Born Free” music video. What the music industry needs right now is creative underground artists like MIA, not the same old superficial mainstream products like Gaga. In other words, MIA’s criticisms are valid. MIA has nothing personally against Gaga, but is only using her as an example to make a social statement (as she usually does) about what’s wrong with the music industry today.

“None of her music’s reflective of how weird she wants to be or thinks she is,”

What the fuck does she care?
Gaga is pretty much a repersenative for people uncomfortable with themselves, she brings the a type of music that they love.

@above: it is pop music, that is its purpose. And her songs have more of a meaning than you think.

@above: it is pop music, that is its purpose. And her songs have more of a meaning than you think. And those superfitinal meaning you mentined are important they judge how much a person likes a song.Lets leave changing the world to politicans, not gaga’s fault that shri lanka has problems.Abd gaga is(or at least was) amugst thos 100 people too.And people just have diffrent tastes their aian’t nothing wrong with music.Good for mia that see has strong meaning to her music, rather admirable, but you have to like the song to get to know the meaning.Which since she is not super popular, maybe alot of people don’t care or like it.

  28. John

Personally, I think they both blow ass. Gaga is another Britney Spears/Madonna clone in stupid outfits she doesn’t create herself, and M.I.A. is a hack that openly supports a terrorist group.

  29. Ric

very Important. Before you comment – YOU PEOPLE SHOULD KNOW WHO MIA IS. Girl is amazing, original and makes killer music. That being said, I love Gaga and think the bashing comes off as heavy jealousy cause MIA wants the power and influence that Gaga has…

  30. Ahna

I LOVE M.I.A and thank heavens she said this Lady Gaga is OVERRATED! M.I.A. raps about the truth, she incorparates world issues into her songs and GaGa just talks about f%cking telephones and dancing! WTF Team M.I.A. all the way baby! Nothing is unique about Lady KaKa.

  31. Marie

Lady Gaga only made world records cause people who think what real music is listen to her. M.I.A—ALL THE WAY!
All I have to say is that I KNOW she should have Lady Kaka’s spotlight she actually haves meaning in her lyrics and Lady Gaga haves to pull shit out of her ass about what her songs mean when god knows all she talks about sexual fantasies w/women and fucking telephones!

  32. Jay

hard;y MIA’s entire career srests upon her ‘amazing (but utlitmately priviledged ) upbringing and a tpyical and no t original hatred for the establishment – whooo, nobodoies ever thought ouf that.

Twin that with her america-centric cultural theft of other people (namely black music) throw in some cash register noises and you have a song. an incredibly nasal and poorly written song.

Being named as influential is only as true as your influence spreads and her song paper planes is more or less in the same bracet as Ke$ha’s tick tock song. the lyrics aren;t special or meaningful, it’s highly repetitive and has no real message.

take away the cash register noises which i guess we havebn’t heard sionce pink floyd and she actually has no song.

No Gaga can sing, we’ve seen videos of her pre-fame days so she absoutely does have talent, why she’s decided to masquerade as an average singer is beyond me but MIA has no such talents at all. just, an incredibly nasal voice.

moat importantly is that her politics, born from her fathers group of a ethnic Sri lankan tamils who racistly wish for their own country because the British empire is no longer there to favour them over the Sinhalese native majority.

Look it up, her political opinions and viewpoints come from a certified political racist who wished to carve the country of Sri Lanka up merely because the actual majority of that country wanted to redress the 200 years or so of Tamil domination.

So… you lose MIA. Your politics are derivative, hence why you have to blithely prattle on about social injustic here rather than back home because your family are on the side the rest of the world considers brutal (but incompetent terrorists, the Tamil Tigers)

your music relies on cheap samples and cute noises and your lyrics endlessly repeat through t the auto-tuner.

have you actually any more songs or do you now concede that paper planes made it to the charts more because of the noises than the lyrics and the messagees.

I mean all you did in the video was operate a cash register whilst looking like you rummaged through gaga leftovers..

    Count it!

  33. Essence

Most of you people don’t know what your talking about in the first place, because MOST of you don’t know the True history of either one of these talented woman. Most of you base your opinions aBout these woman on their celebrity or song, but these two ladies are extremely talanted, and unique in their own way(and didnt come from “MONEY”). Im disappointed in MIA for her comments on Lady Gaga cause I don’t think it was right when Gaga didnt say anything about her, but I have to respect thats MIA’s opinion. And I don’t like how Lady Gaga takes from Madonna so much, but then I think Gaga is very creative, truly and passionately artistic, and a FANTASTIC singer (just listen to the song “speechless”). TWO GREAT WOMAN, THAT I WISH COULD OF MADE A SONG TOGETHER, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN SWEET!!!

  34. Essence

Actually if I could be alittle personal, everytime I listen to Lady Gaga’s song “So happy I could die”, I imagine them singing it together. Mia singing the hook and saying “get high get high”, and Gaga singing the song, lol…, yes I’m high right now. But like I said I love them both.

  35. Mia (my real name)

Lmfao, I just bought M.I.A.’s new album today (MAYA). It’s fckn raw just like her others.

Haha, all i have to say is today’s mainstream and the youth of our society are just ignorant, and fckn wack.

I have respect for M.I.A. because she dgaf about making it big into the mainstream because wack ass ppl dont wanna hear about the real shit she has to say.

“Big on the UNDERGROUND, what’s the point of knocking me down?”
    -Birdflu

haha, fuck she’s a fckn gangster.

Lady Gaga, I got nothing against her.
It’s just I would rather bump “Kala” in my car any fckn day, then “The Fame Monster”. hahahahahaha.

    M.I.A. (Bird Flu)
“Protocol to be a rocker on the label? It didn’t really drop that way, my beats were too evil!”

Who is MIA compared to GAGA?

    why even bother compare?

Gaga’s success speaks for itself. Jealous ones will always blabber. Sucks doesnt it to be the loser?

  38. j0mamma

“MIA (an underground artist) may not be as popular or “mainstream” as Lady Gaga, but MIA’s music certainly has far more creativity, originality, deep meaning and artistic talent than the likes of Gaga could ever hope to achieve!”

Yes because flashing epilepsy-inducing backgrounds on a music video is totally artistic, creative and original.

Most people don’t want to have to listen to a “song” and end up having to google the lyrics just to understand wtf it’s about.

  39. Blake Okafor

LOL people are like “MIA sings about issues”

and? so? i should care why? are you doing anything about it? instead of insulting people just trying to have fun get back to the people who need you!!!
