Sri Lankan rapper M.I.A. dished it out to Lady Gaga with a heaping helping of sass in an interview with NME. M.I.A. references Gaga at least three times, blasting the singer about her image and her influence on pop music. The highlights?
M.I.A. thinks Gaga, pictured in Sydney on April 6, is deluded about her avant-garde persona.
“None of her music’s reflective
of how weird she wants to be or thinks she is,” the rapper said. “She models herself on
Grace Jones and Madonna, but the music sounds like 20-year-old Ibiza
music, you know? She’s not progressive, but she’s a good mimic.” Burnnnn.
But don’t worry, M.I.A., pictured at an H&M event on Nov. 2, 2009, has some backhanded compliments to slap out too!
sounds more like me than I fucking do! That’s a talent and she’s got a
great team behind her, but she’s the industry last’s stab at making
itself important – saying, ‘You need our money behind you, the
endorsements, the stadiums’ Respect to her, she’s keeping a hundred
thousand people in work, but my belief is: Do It Yourself.” I take it M.I.A. is not a Haus of Gaga fan…
But she’s not finished! When asked if we need record labels anymore, she snarks: “Are they even interested in making money from music anymore? Lady Gaga
plugs 15 things in her new video. Dude, she even plugs a burger!” Um, I kind of thought that was the point…
More you say? How important are visuals to M.I.A’s music? ” Very. But it’s not like “Haus of Gaga” (laughs). Me blindfolded with naked men feeding me apples and shit.”
The winner of this little feud? Gaga. You never see Gaga talking shit about other ladies. And second, the pop superstar has made it very clear that part of her persona/image/plan for world domination is being a successful, commercial pop artist (so yes, a mimic). Maybe Gaga is just too meta for you, M.I.A., but even if you don’t get it, don’t bring a sister down.
