In this week’s episode of Lifetime’s Project Runway, Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn surprised the designers yet again by splitting up the teams into pairs. When the designers saw the infamous button bag, they knew that it was on.

Since Samantha won last week’s challenge she ws able to choose first and opted for Daniel. The following designers were paired as Richard and Stanley, Patricia and Layana, Matthew and Michelle, Kate and Tu, and finally Benjamin and Amanda.

Next the designers met up at a bar in NYC called Johnny Utah’s which was very country. The challenge? Create two looks for Grammy Award winning country artist Miranda Lambert. One look must be for performances and one for a red carpet event. Each designer will choose a look, but it doesn’t have to be cohesive with their partner’s look. Bring it on!

Immediately, the designers sketch and they get very ambitious in their designs. After going to Mood to buy fabric, one set of designers realizes they’ve only spent $270 of their entire $400 budget. Benjamin is a little worried, but the team carries on. Benjamin is also worried about working with Amanda after last week’s events caused her to be thrown under the bus by her teammates, but when he finds out that she is from Nashville and sees Miranda all the time, he gets more confident.

Michelle is very excited about the challenge and even pokes fun at Nina Garcia by doing a hilarious impersonation. Her partner Matthew is once again questioning himself, but knows he wants to create a complicated two piece tank and skirt for the performance ensemble. By the end of the first day, Michelle is nearly finished with her edgy rocker look while Matthew has barely finished the top and has no idea what to do for the skirt.

Daniel seems to have gained a lot of confidence with all of his wins and he makes a gown with leather scrunched up into flowerettes on the top. He keeps bragging up this technique in a delightfully cheerful way. Then he frays the edges of the gown and puts a seam down the center of the dress despite Tim Gunn’s advice against it. His partner Samantha creates a leather and suede vest with a ruffled jersey fabric skirt. Tim likes the idea, which gives her confidence.

At the runway, the judges tell Patricia, Layana, Kate, and Tu that they’re safe. Patricia created a brown and gold mini dress with white fringe pieces and bullet holsters on the front. The fringe technique was amazing, but the fabric underneath was terrible. Layana made a navy blue gown that was light and beautiful. Kate made a red gown with leather in a mermaid style with red tulle bottom. Tu wanted to create a Gaga type look with dramatic shaping, but was discouraged by Tim Gunn and Kate, so he settled for a woven top with hip flair pieces.

The judges loved Benjamin, Amanda, Stanley, and Richard’s looks which put them in the top four. Benjamin actually put his money where his mouth is and created a dark navy gown that was fitted around the middle and had a beautiful shaped bustle in the back. Amanda made an amazing navy fringe dress that was fun and easy, but perfect for Miranda’s performance. Stanley made a red carpet dress that had a deep v-neck and a lot of pleating around the waist. This made Miranda nervous and Zac Posen didn’t love the fit in the bust. Richard looked to be in trouble in the design room by creating a mesh fringe dress with metal embellishments, but made it work by cutting up a Mood t-shirt he purchased with his budget money and was able to line the mesh. The judges loved this look and named him the winner!

The bottom designers were Matthew, Michelle, Samantha, and Daniel. Matthew didn’t ever follow through on his promise to make a great skirt to match his tank for the performance piece. Michelle loved her look and stood by it, despite Nina Garcia tearing it apart. Michelle loves hair bands from the eighties and Nina hates them. Her fringe necklace was horrible for the judges. Samantha’s look didn’t impress, but since she was paired with Daniel she landed in the bottom. Daniel’s dress looked cheap and the judges thought his leather technique was actually tin foil. The seam down the center appalled them also. Miranda Lambert was sad to see Matthew bash on his look and not show any confidence. The judges ended up sending him home.

I was surprised Richard pulled out such a great design; he definitely deserved the win this week. I work at DISH, and my co-worker and I love talking about Project Runway. Unfortunately, this airs on a night when I work late, but with my DISH Hopper and its 2,000 hours of storage space, I’m able to record the full season along with the full seasons of my other favorite shows. This way I can watch them at a time when it’s convenient for me. It’s nice never having to worry about deleting my favorite shows because there’s always enough room available.
