Now that things are getting up and running, the drama is coming out full swing for Lifetime’s Project Runway All Stars. The designers are starting to show their true colors, whether they want to or not. Ivy is embarrassed from her performance in her previous season and claims it was merely a rough patch in her life, but Laura Kathleen doesn’t buy it.
Kayne is also getting snotty and starts talking smack on Laura Kathleen with Ivy. Prepare for the drama folks! Carolyn Murphy meets the designers in Long Island City where the largest legal display of aerosol art is located. The challenge is to take lessons from aerosol artists and then paint white fabric, either cotton or chiffon. The choices of color got really interesting.
Suede chose yellow and green with black back ground. Anthony Ryan chose a light blue stripe pattern and black accents. Ivy started writing power words on her fabric, representing a female superhero. Althea used a cardboard pattern to create purple and yellow leopard print. Laura Kathleen was not pleased because she too used purple and yellow. Emilio used fire colors in red and yellows. And then Kayne took a few hits of acid and just created a whole bunch of crazy shit. Ivy also helped Casanova since he helped her the previous week.
Next the designers go to Mood to shop with $50 dollars in 15 minutes. Most of them grab accent fabrics to showcase their artistic painting. Once back at the hotel, the two groups of guys and gals start talking major smack. Althea says that Kayne is going to have trouble with his design. Joshua says that it’s a very personal challenge, like critiquing someone’s appearance.
Back at the workroom, Joanna Coles gives them her usual banter. Is it just me or does her advice seem so flat and unhelpful compared to Tim Gunn’s regular assessments? Either way, Joanna is interesting to watch, but doesn’t seem to offer the greatest advice.
Emilio is constructing a denim style jacket from his painted fabric and pairs it with a straight skirt and red top. Kayne designs an evening gown which was elaborate and much more impressive than I originally anticipated. It’s a mermaid style with velvet ribbon accentuating the woman’s curves.
Anthony Ryan creates an adorable little day dress with fantastic design embellishment on the top. Ivy’s look was amazing in shape, but confusing in concept. The words didn’t translate well for Isaac Mizrahi. Guest judges this episode were two of Anna Wintour’s favorites, Jeffrey Costello and Robert Tagliapietra aka the lumberjack twins.
The top and bottom designers this week are named. Ivy, Emilio, Suede, Anthony Ryan, Kayne and Laura Kathleen each describe their looks while the others are safe. The judges love Ivy’s shape and design atheistic. But they rave over Emilio’s work, which clearly stood out as the best. Remember Emilio from his season? Amazingly talented. Thus he wins the challenge. Anthony Ryan was also safe and applauded for his efforts.
Suede’s dress had circles cut out and pasted onto the bodice with a handkerchief skirt. It isn’t working well. Laura Kathleen had a very short hem on her cocktail dress and added piano fringe on the back which didn’t make any sense at all. Kayne was well . . . Kayne and just overcomplicated his look. This was a shame because you could tell he really put his all into it.
In the end, the judges could no longer justify Suede staying and sent him home. It’s too bad though, because we won’t be hearing him describe himself in the third person any longer. Oh darn.
