If you’ve been under the impression that today is only National Donut Day, let me give you a quick history lesson: today also marks the 70th anniversary of D-Day, when the Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy during World War II.
Everybody got that? Good. Now let’s get to the fun stuff.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, aka Prince William and Kate Middleton, made a special appearance in France today to help commemorate the landings. Prince William made a speech, Catherine re-wore a McQueen coat–it was all very lovely.
While they were busy doing that, Benedict Cumberbatch was busy taking you back in time by reading real D-Day BBC news bulletins. It’s kind of amazing. Sir Patrick Stewart and Toby Jones also got in on the bulletin reenactments, and if you have some time to spare I suggest listening to them all.
If not, the one I’ve given you of Benedict below is pretty awesome and worth a listen. I feel like I should say “Happy D-Day,” but that just sounds weird.
So instead, I’m gonna tell you to give Benedict a listen below, then launch the gallery for some royal photos. Royals, Cumberbatch, donuts–it’s a good day indeed folks.
