New Girl (Fox, Tuesdays, 9pmEST)
If you need to cast an offbeat, quirky actress for a sitcom, is there really any other choice than Zooey Deschanel? The She and Him singer and cotton aficionado stars as a newly dumped gal who, through the usual sitcom contrivances, moves in with three single guys. Deschanel's charms are undeniable, despite the fact that it's impossible to believe that she has trouble finding a date (and an affinity for Dirty Dancing). One of Zooey's roomies is played (in the pilot at least), by Damon Wayans, Jr., currently starring on the just-renewed (yay!) Happy Endings on ABC. Is he going to pull double duty? In an interview with Hollywood Crush, Zooey described the show thusly, "I feel like it's like a kind of modern Mary Tyler Moore [Show] [or] That Girl, and it's stylized. It's not a musical, but it has the vibrancy of a musical, and my character sings all the time, like out of nowhere. I think it definitely fills that. I feel like there's a new generation of girls that are taught to just be themselves, which is amazing. And this is the first [show] that I've come across on TV [that projects that]." Fans of the wide-eyed actress are throwing their hats in the air in jubilation already!
