The Whack Heard Around the World : On January 6, while stepping off the ice after practice, Nancy Kerrigan was clubbed in the right knee by one Shane Stant. The assault was planned by the ex-husband of Tonya Harding, who was competing against Kerrigan at the U.S. Figure Skating Championship for a spot on the US women’s Olympic Team. As a result of her injury, Kerrigan was forced to withdraw from the Championship; however, she still managed to win a spot on the Olympic team. Kerrigan recovered fast enough to take home silver in the ladies’ singles competition at the 1994 Winter Olympic games in Lillehammer, Norway.
