Looking at him, especially the movies he’s in, you wouldn’t think that Orlando Bloom is one of the most accident prone actors around. Well, not just regular accident prone, more like he’s almost died from his injuries accident prone. Orlando is on this month’s cover of Men’s Health and talked about his injuries, his need to live life and also make sure he’s there for his family, wife Miranda Kerr and son Flynn Bloom.
At age 21, Orlando thought it would be a good idea to scale a drainpipe. Turns out it wasn’t. Orlando fell backwards three stories and completely broke his back. “It was a ‘holy shit’ moment.” He was paralyzed for four days, but after several surgeries, many many drills, screws and plates in his back and 18 months later, Orlando was riding horses and killing Orcs in The Lord of the Rings. No wonder he was down for pain meds when Miranda gave birth. They probably have no effect on him anymore.
These days Orlando is more careful, even while riding his mountain bike around on dangerous terrain. He’s a father now and knows he needs to be there for Flynn and his fabulous smelling hair. Why does he do it still? Orlando wants “anything that brings me into my body and keeps me present. As opposed to out of your body, which is what we do the rest of the time. The world throws you out of your body, especially the cyberworld.”
Isn’t he afraid? “Fear is not a friend of mine. But it’s something to have a healthy awareness of. I can’t stop living. It would ruin my creativity, the person I am.” Oh Orlando, I love you. Hold me? Please?
