One Engagement And A Victory On Last Night’s ‘American Idol’ [PHOTOS]
Oh wow. So much happend at the American Idol finale last night. Chaka Khan in a bejeweled body stocking, former Idols proposing on stage…and of course, a winner. Oh yes, and Jennifer Lopez performed. Again.
I have to admit that Ace Young and Diana DeGarmo’s relationship is adorable. “We became best friends through Hair, ironically not through Idol,” De Garmo told People. “It just blossomed into a beautiful relationship.” The two lovebirds, after connection on the Broadway production, moved in together this past January.
The two had to get naked for the play, which more or less sped things along. “She said, ‘You’re not looking, right?’ ” Young said about stripping down during the first rehearsals. “And I was like, ‘Oh no, not at all.’ But I was looking, and I was like – sold!”
So tonight, Young called on Ryan Seacrest to help set the mood at Nokia Theater in downtown Los Angeles. “Dim the lights” Seacrest commanded, cueing the dramatic music. Young then dropped to his knee and told DeGarmo, “This has always been home to us and I felt that this would be the perfect place to ask a simple question.
“We have conquered Broadway together. We have created our new music together. We have an amazing group of people around us. And with the help of David Webb jewelry I have a way to make this last forever. Are you ready?” Great plug, there. Free ring! “I love you to death. You’re my best friend. I want to make this last forever and I will do anything in my power to have the most … amazing life together if you will have me. Diana Nicole DeGarmo, will you marry me?”
Young then presented DeGarmo with a 18kt yellow gold, platinum, and diamond engagement ring featuring a light, fancy yellow center stone weighing approximately 1ct and two side diamonds weighing 0.2cts.
“I’m so speechless right now,” DeGarmo siad. “Wow, babe, you picked a good one! My makeup’s running.”
And finally, the winner. Seacrest made us sit through several commercial breaks to learn who won this season’s Idol. “After a record breaking 132 million votes,” Seacrest said, “the winner of American Idol season 11 is … Phillip Phillips!” Mr Phillips then performed his new single, “Home” but had to take a time-out when it occurred to him that he won. Why do the producers make the winners do this? Let them drink in the moment. Don’t make them sing.
Sidenote: the phone book skit might have been my favorite part of the night.
