Nirvana’s “Heart Shape Box” Is About Courtney Love’s Vagina? And Five Other Surprising Song Lyrics [PHOTOS & VIDEOS]

Courtney Love Drinks!

Did anyone have any idea that Nirvana’s “Heart Shaped Box” is about Courtney Love’s vagina?

Did anyone know this before Courtney Love tweeted this to Lana Del Rey after the singer covered the song in concert? Well I’ll be honest, I didn’t. Mostly because the only words I know from the song is “Hey! Wait!”.

The tweets have been deleted but fortunately, our friends over at Stereogum screenshot the tweets.

Love later tweeted back at Del Rey “You are gorgeous and very talented, it was all in good humor love, it is true however bwahaa xc.” Oh Courtney.

I’m sure Del Rey had some idea what “Heart Shaped Box” is about because she is apparently a huge Nirvana fan. In an interview with NME she spoke about her Kurt Cobain inspiration: “When I was 11, I saw Kurt Cobain singing ‘Heart Shaped Box’ on MTV and it really stopped me dead in my tracks. I thought he was the most beautiful person I had ever seen. Even at a young age, I really related to his sadness.”

Although the comment was rather… blunt, I appreciate the enlightening tweet. Most of the time people just sing aimlessly, having no idea what the lyrics actually mean. I am guilty of it, as you can tell from me having no idea that “Heart Shape Box” is about Courtney Love’s vagina.

Here are 5 other songs that might surprise you as well….

“Pumped Up Kicks” by Foster the People

Without a doubt the Foster the People single was a huge hit when it was first released in 2010. It was catchy and fun, just the kind of song you’d want to listen to with the windows down. The song, however, isn’t as light as most would presume. It is actually about a kid going on a shooting spree. Despite the rather creepy undertone it’s still a summer favorite.

“We Are Young” by fun.

“We Are Young” has been suggested as a high school graduation song numerous times, mostly because of the anthem-like chorus. The first verse is skimmed or ignored, usually the latter of the two. After reading the lyrics in its entirety, I can only assume that it is about domestic abuse. Anyone else feel me on this one?

“Bad Religion” by Frank Ocean

One blogger questioned Frank Ocean’s sexuality after reviewing Channel Orange, creating quite an uproar. Many big names like Billboard and MTV apparently questioned the reviewer because of his daring claims. Later Ocean shared his past romantic relationship with a man, thus proving the blogger’s assumption. The blogger left it at this: “The most important thing I guess I have learnt is I was one of the only few people that listened to the music properly…I guess…… “

“There She Goes” by The La’s

The song was used in the opening scene of the Gilmore Girls’ pilot for goodness sake. The song has been commonly interpreted as a song about a girl when the song is actually about drugs. It is about the feeling one gets when under heroin. I can see how many have gotten the two mixed up.

“Like A Virgin” by Madonna

Apparently, it isn’t about a virgin who has been touched for the very first time…well, not exactly. Lyricist Billy Steinberg clarified in an interview with the LA Times that the song is about how he “felt new and unhurt the next time he fell in love, as if he had never been hurt before”. Mind officially blown.
