Tobey Maguire was paid $4 million for the first Spider-Man film and at least $15 million for both sequels and was reportedly offered $20 million for the fourth installment when Sony scrapped it in favor of the franchise reboot.
Part of that reboot was probably to lower production costs, including that of Spidey’s salary. Andrew Garfield, the new Peter Parker, has reportedly agreed to a paycheck of $500,000 for this first film, which could also have multiple sequels. I can understand their reasoning. Keep costs down, uncertainty about how a reboot will do to a franchise that was terribly successful not that long ago.
I have no clue how they are going to make this whole thing work, but alas, that’s not for me to worry about. All I know is that I’ll be sitting in the theatre, watching Garfield, on July 3, 2012 when it premieres.
