This actress always makes a huge impression on screen, and so it’s no wonder that her debut behind the camera is generating a lot of hype.
Natalie Portman is busy filming her new movie A Tale of Love and Darkness in Jerusalem currently, and her choice to film there is causing a bit of controversy. The local residents feel that filming the movie in such a religious neighborhood is inappropriate, but the Israel born Natalie felt very strongly that this is where her movie should be shot. Natalie is both directing and acting in the film.
Local residents composed a letter to officials, stating, ”The film shooting is set to take place on several sensitive streets close to synagogues and yeshivas, and the scenes being filmed should have been examined first to make sure they don’t offend anybody’s sensitivities.” To add to the tension, graffiti has appeared around where filming is taking place calling the whole process “a foreign invasion.”
Natalie, however, is unfazed. ”Israel just captures my imagination in a way, that’s where I wanted to tell my first filmic story. I don’t know another place that’s so visually interesting and obviously dense with stories, so I’m really, really excited.”The film is based on a book by Israeli author Amos Oz about his experiences growing up in Israel. Natalie will be playing Oz’s mother in the film.
Despite all the attention, Natalie seems to be sticking to her guns. Bravo, girl. I can’t wait to see what her first directing gig will turn out to be like! If its anything like her acting, we should be in for a treat.
