Maura Tierney, who made her first public appearance at the Emmy’s last month, sat down with PARADE Magazine to discuss her battle with breast cancer and her fresh perspective on life.
Best known for her role as Dr. Abby Lockhart on award winning series ER, Tierney found it difficult when it came down to visiting her own personal physician.
“I was so, so scared of going to the doctor. I felt something, and my boyfriend at the time
made me go. He said, ‘You’ve got to take care of this,’ because I was afraid. That’s one thing I
will say: Don’t be afraid to go to the damn doctor. Just go!” said Tierney.
The visit proved to be one that saved her life, as doctor’s were able to treat the aggressive form of cancer found. Since recovering, Tierney has embraced a new perspective on life.
“There is one thing I’ve learned for sure. It’s a life-changing thing to be in a position of
needing help and being so lucky as to get it. And to feel like that’s okay. You can’t just take
care of everybody else all the time. That’s almost as perspective-changing as the illness. For
someone like me, that was kind of tough,” said Tierney.
Although she was unable to commit to her Parenthood role, she’s staying busy with a new role on ABC’s legal drama, The Whole Truth, reprising her role as Kelly McPhee on Rescue Me, and attending the Disney ABC Television Group’s Summer TCA party at the Beverly Hilton on August 1st in Beverly Hills.
Got to admit, Maura Tierney is looking fierce. Work that pout, girl.
