Despite a number of setbacks that jeopardized The Fighter from being made, Mark Wahlberg was able to complete the biopic about fighter “Irish” Micky Ward. Matt Damon and director Darren Aronofsky pulled out of the film, and then it became less of a big budget blockbuster and more of an independent project. Still, Wahlberg gave his word to Ward that the film would be made. Wahlberg explained to Deadline.com, “I believed in this movie, that it was an amazing story that could inspire people. I thought those guys were so heroic. And I’d given my word and I didn’t want to be that guy who said, ‘Hey, we’re doing something’, and then not…”
The Fighter is based on the true story of “Irish” Micky Ward, a fighter from Lowell, Masshachusetts. It co-stars Christian Bale and Amy Adams, and opens in theaters December 10th.
