It seems that the reign of Madonna is still as strong as ever, in the music industry. With over 20 years of pop domination, the singer is on her 9th world tour. You’d think that with the abundance of new artists these days, older entertainers like Madonna would sort of remain on the back burner in the eyes of the masses. Fortunately for the singer, her fans are loyal, long-standing, and most of all, aplenty.
With the new year quickly approaching, Billboard has released the final tally for the Top 25 Grossing Tours of the year. Holding the top spot wasn’t Taylor Swift (who did manage to snag the 24 spot), One Direction, or Justin Bieber, but the undisputed Queen of Pop herself.
What does it entail to have the highest grossing tour of 2012? Well, let’s look at the numbers. Madonna’s MDNA Tour had 72 shows under her belt when the report came out, and she sold out every single one. This wracked up over $228,000,000 in profits from the European, Asian, South and North American legs of the 7-month-long tour. Suck on that, Biebs!
This comes as a little bit of a paradox, when compared to the tepid sales of Madge’s 12th studio album, also entitled MDNA, which only reached the 44th most sold album of the year (selling 521,000 records) according to Billboard. From all of the facts and figures regarding the financial journey of Madonna in 2012, this is what I gather: although music-lovers opened their hearts, ears and wallets to other artists this year, they still rely on Madonna to provide the most entertaining concert they could possibly attend, as she’s always done.
A Queen’s work is never done! Madonna is currently on the South American leg of the tour. The singer stepped out with her backup dancer and boyfriend, Brahim Zaibat, to have dinner in Buenos Aires, Argentina during some of her downtime between concerts. Check out the gallery to see that.
