Losing His Virginity At 20, Dating Demi & Dealing With Disney: Joe Jonas Opens Up To ‘Vulture’
In the lengthy interview, the former Jonas Brother touches on everything from when he lost his virginity (those promise rings had to go at some point), his first time smoking weed (with two other Disney stars – guess who?), and his current relationship status.
Jonas Brothers, who announced their sudden disbandment in October. “It was always a struggle because every single night we were walking into hate,” he said of their early years. “Sometimes people flipped us off, threw water bottles at us.”
However, “Everything completely changed when Disney entered the picture,” and the teen-friendly trio were eventually playing at arenas and starring in their own Disney sitcom, JONAS. Despite the seemingly overnight success that Disney had afforded them, Joe had some critical words about working on the show:
But the thing about the show was that some of the writing on it was terrible. It just ended up being some weird slapstick humor that only a 10-year-old would laugh at…I had to shave every day because they wanted me to pretend like I was 16 when I was 20 (when the show was done, I cut my hair off and grew as much of a beard as I could). We went along with it at the time, because we thought Disney was our only real shot, and we were terrified that it could all be taken away from us at any moment.
While Joe is currently dating an unnamed “someone I really care about” (whose name probably rhymes with Wanda Beggenschwiler), one girl who Joe was willing to open up about was ex-girlfriend Demi Lovato:
I really got to know her and got to see the ins and outs of what she was struggling with, like drug abuse. I felt like I needed to take care of her, but at the same time I was living a lie, because I wasn’t happy but felt like I had to stay in it for her, because she needed help. I couldn’t express any of that, of course, because I had a brand to protect.
its current ambassador Miley Cyrus: “The first time I smoked weed was with Demi and Miley. I must have been 17 or 18.”
Finally, Joe addressed the Jonas Brothers’ breakup, which led to a canceled tour and an untold number of broken hearts: “The Jonas Brothers’ breakup was going on for a lot longer than a lot of people thought. We hit a place where we just weren’t jelling on the same things, and we didn’t want to become a band that was worried about the fact that people didn’t understand how cool we were.”
But don’t worry about Joe Jonas’ future, as the former Disney star has plans for a reinvention of sorts:
Now that I’m 24 and have control of my life, I’m going back to the drawing board. I’ve been through a shit-ton of stuff, but I’m genuinely excited because now I can go back to the studio with those people who I used to work with. I don’t have to rely on anyone else’s opinion, whether good or bad, and hear them say, ‘No, no, you can’t go write with them. That’s too weird for us.’ Because weird works.
