Baz Luhrmann is hoping to return to his Moulin Rouge glory days since his 2008 film Australia pretty much bombed. He recently told MTV that he has two projects ready to go: a New York City-set musical and an adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald‘s The Great Gatsby.
“I’ve got the script for both of them and I’m making that decision in four to six weeks, no longer than six weeks,” he said, adding, “It’s just a question of … what is the next right step for me.”
Production Weekly tweeted that Gatsby might already have a cast, fingering Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby, his longtime friend Tobey Maguire, seen here with his wife and kids playing in the park, as Nick Carraway, and Amanda Seyfried as Daisy Buchanan.
It’s a bit daring to remake the already classic film starring Robert Redford, much less give the novel yet another book-to-screen transformation. But perhaps Luhrmann can capture the grandiose essence of the story…? We’ll see. But I like that casting rumor thus far.
