Oh things started off so well. The actress looked lovely in a gold dress at the Cannes Film Festival photocall for her new film Melancholia. Kirsten Dunst stars as Justine in the film, a bride who is gripped by depression on what should be the happiest day of her life.

At the press conference for the film, Danish director Lars Von Trier jokingly declared himself a Nazi, causing consternation among the assembled reporters and offense among Jewish groups.

I really wanted to be a Jew and then I found out I was really a Nazi, you know, because my family was German … which also gave me some pleasure. What can I say? I understand Hitler. I think he did some wrong things, yes absolutely, but I can see him sitting in his bunker in the end.”

More from the press conference, plus video…

Dunst looked increasingly uncomfortable as Van Trier went on. Von Trier tried to back off his statements when the crowd grew obviously uncomfortable.

“I’m not against the Jews. I am of course very much for the Jews. How can I get out of this sentence, ok I’m a Nazi,” the director said. As the press conference broke up, Dunst, who was no longer smiling, could be heard saying: “Oh Lars, that was intense.”

Are you effing kidding me? You said Hitler “did some wrong things”. How about actually admitting the fact that Hitler commited the most massive killing of human beings in the history of time??? Where is your sense of humanity?
