Kate Winslet’s BAFTA Brings Her One Step Closer to Oscar

February 9th, 2009 // 3 Comments

Kate Winslet gave yet another dramatic acceptance speech last night while accepting the award for “Best Actress” at the Orange British Academy Film Awards.  The Reader has earned Kate a handful of awards this year, so it seems like the real shock will come if the actress doesn’t bag her Oscar this month. Not to mention it will make Kate the biggest Oscar-nominated loser.  That would be kind of like climaxing and then hitting a plateau instead of an orgasm.  Not cool at all!

The winning streak also continued for Slumdog Millionaire, which won “Best Film,” and Mickey Rourke, who won “Best Actor.”  The ever-eloquent Wrestler star balanced his trophy in one hand and his bottle of wine in the other, telling audience members that he’d “fucked up [his] career for 15 years.”  Then it was time to pay tribute to Marisa Tomei for her stellar, um, acting.

“I enjoyed looking at her,” Mickey said of her portrayal of a stripper.

Is there a “Best Gentleman” award?  Because clearly, Mickey should win that one too.  The actor had plenty of eye candy to enjoy last night, as the red carpet glittered with the likes of Emily Mortimer, Kylie Minogue, Amy Adams, Freida Pinto, Angelina Jolie, Karolina Kurkova, and Penelope Cruz – who won “Best Supporting” Actress for her role as a bisexual artist in Woody Allen‘s Vicky Cristina Barcelona.  Not surprisingly, “Best Supporting Actor” went to Heath Ledger for Dark Knight.

Featured in the gallery: Kate Winslet, Robert Downey Jr., Kristen Scott Thomas, Emily Mortimer, Anil Kapoor, Patrick Stewart, Martin Sheen, Christian Slater, Ron Howard, Meryl Streep, Karolina Kurkova, Marisa Tomei, Dominic Cooper, Marion Cotillard, Penelope Cruz, Daniel Craig, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Freida Pinto, Amy Adams, Goldie Hawn, Mickey Rourke, Thandie Newtown, Michael Sheen, Sharon Stone, Kylie Minogue.
