Princess Anne, Zara Phillips, and Prince Edward made the rounds, talking with the athletes and admiring their medals, which were prominently displayed around their necks.
Phillips, who won silver at this summer’s games, introduced her grandmother to fellow athletes. Catherine found herself surrounded by the women’s hockey team, who won bronze at the games while Her Royal Highness cheered them on.
Brace yourselves, because I’m about to deliver some bad news. I didn’t like Catherine’s Alice Temperley dress at all tonight. It was far too frilly for my tastes, and I just don’t like peplum sleeves. With that said, the rest of her looked outstanding. The hair was sleek, the Jimmy Choo heels were high and her smile was radiant. You can’t win them all, right?
The athletes, dressed in Team GB blazers for the occasion, were invited by the British Monarchy’s Twitter account to write about their night (in 140 characters or less).
Equestrian Charlotte Dujardian wrote, “Tuesday check. Ridden 8 horses check. Off to Buckingham Palace in 10 minutes to meet the Queen check me out!”
Later this evening, Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall (in a purple velvet gown by Bruce Oldfield) attended the royal world premiere of Skyfall at the Royal Albert Hall. The Prince of Wales was delayed by fog on his way back from County Durham, so had to pull out of the Team GB reception at the last minute, according to royal reporter Richard Palmer.
