Kanye West Evokes Jesus

January 25th, 2006 // 11 Comments

Kanye knows how to push the buttons. I’ll let ya’ll take this one.

Kanye West, with a crown of thorns atop his head, poses as Jesus Christ on the cover of the upcoming issue of Rolling Stone. The outspoken rapper defends his brash attitude inside the magazine’s pages, on newsstands Friday. He is also pictured posing as Muhammad Ali.

“In America, they want you to accomplish these great feats, to pull off these David Copperfield-type stunts,” he says. “You want me to be great, but you don’t ever want me to say I’m great?”

The strangest tangent of the Rolling Stone story, however, is when West says he’s addicted to pornography. He remembers first seeing his father’s Playboy magazine when he was 5 years old. “Right then,” West says, laughing, “it was like, `Houston, we have a problem.’”

I now know what to get Kanye for Christmas.

evoking the image of Jesusany to create a shock/controversy…..bit overused isn’t it? I mean there are other quite a few artists that have used Jesus as an image of controversy before:

    1) madonna like a prayer video-the infamous (and very good looking) black jesus statue

    2) woody harrelson posed as jesus for his Larry Flint movie covering the naked ladies “flower” at the same time

    3) “nasty” Nas the rapper with his crucifixion video-that was way back in the day,

    4) Mel Gibson practically caused a war with his film the passion of the Christ

    5) muhammad ali and tom cruise images at some point have been reproduced to look like christ with arrows stuck in their sides on magazine covers

im nor trying to start any arguement-i just think that the image of christ is being overused a lot nowadays, it seems bizarre that anyone can get offended over it-religion should be interpreted in different ways, if Kanye thinks selling loads of albums and calling george bush racist then so be it-i just think people should come up with more original and honest ways of getting their points across – dont intend to offend anyone

    peace, love, out

sorry that should read: “if kanye thinks selling loads of albums, being rich and calling george bush a racist compares to the life of jesus christ then so be it” let him think it but maybe he should not be quite so egotistical and theatrical when trying to make a point next time

like i said not trying to offend anyone

I think the industry knocked him down a peg. I remember reading that he said he is going to raise hell if he doesn’t get a grammy for his album – late registration or his single – golddigger, because he is the best out there, blah, blah, blah…he may be right, but no one likes a braggart.

And so what, he is addicted to porn. As long it does not involved the use of children or barn animals, who cares and why do we have to know that?

On the news they had a lady from the Catholic League who was offended my Kanye’s portrayal of Jesus because he’s “just a rapper” (ummm hello Jim Caviezel is “just an actor”)…and that Rolling Stone was using the image of Jesus to make money… because Mel Gibson didn’t charge people to see Passion of the Christ and Churches never ask people for money, especially not the Catholic church….besides like IfIType pointed out it’s not the first time Christ’s image has been used by hollywood

  5. tahlullah

When making fun of you for being a braggart is more enjoyable than listening to your music, maybe you’re not all that great…and “Christ-like” sure isn’t it.

  6. Fugly Girl

And Jesus came down and saith, “She take my money when I’m in need
Yea she’s a trifflin friend indeed
Oh she’s a gold digga way over town
    That dig’s on me
Now I aint sayin she a gold digger.”

I’m ducking the lightning bolt. I tend to agree, hasn’t the Jesus thing already been done…….about a hundred times?

  7. Oh look, another controverstial artist takes on Jesus imagery. How brave! How… zzzzzzzzzzz.

  8. anona

Kanye is sounding less like a rapper and more like the spoiled brat he really is.

    LOL, Anna!!!!

One question for Kanye, if your SOOO great then why do u have to keep reminding us?

And for the record, the Album, Song, and Record of the Year were all by the same artist…Mariah Carey…so Kanye should get ready to watch her fine ass collect the Grammys on Feb 8th.

An also, am i the only one who realizes that that whole “George Bush does not care about black people” was simply a careerist move??…pleas dont be fooled by these little tricks…

  10. SodOff

You guys are right, he’s f#24ing arrogant, and FOR NO REASON! I hate that! He’s like Oasis, have a big album and a few hits, then constantly remind us in how “great” you are and then bitch about someone else in the media every few months. Little arrogance never hurt but please!

There are many OTHER ways to express yourself artfully, I don’t think posing as our lord and savior is one of them.

    Dude is a narcissist
