Actor and director Joseph Gordon-Levitt was on hand yesterday (March 11, 2013) to introduce the film Don Jon ((formerly known as Don Jon’s Addiction) during the 2013 SXSW Music, Film + Interactive Festival at the Paramount Theatre in Austin, Texas.
Co-star Tony Danza, who plays Don Jon’s father, was also in attendance. It’s the first film Gordon-Levitt has directed, and he says he’s learned from the best.
“The year before I directed Don Jon I got to work with Rian Johnson who wrote and directed Looper, and Christopher Nolan who made The Dark Knight Rises, and then Steven Spielberg on Lincoln,” Gordon-Levitt said. “I learned a lot from all of them and different things from all of them and they’ve all been really supportive and just the fact that they are genuinely saying that to me is all the encouragement I would need.”
Of the, film he said, “I wanted to tell a story about how people objectify each other and how media often contributes to that, especially when it comes to love and sex. We learn a lot of expectations from movies, or TV shows, or commercials, or magazines, or pornography, and those expectations are unrealistic and maybe not so healthy. And if we’re busy comparing our own lives and our partners to those expectations, we’re doomed.”
Don Jon is a comedy about a porn-addicted ladies man who is trying to change his ways. The movie was previously titled Don Jon’s Addiction before Gordon-Levitt made some slight changes to the film prior to SXSW.
