Jessica Chastain has just been cast to play the late Diana, Princess of Wales in a new biopic, Called To Flight, which will follow her two-year secret love affair with Pakistani heart surgeon, Dr. Hasnat Khan, according to the Telegraph.
The two met at the Royal Brompton Hospital in 1995 when Diana was visiting a friend recovering from heart surgery. The script (in its early drafts), reportedly does “not cast (her) in a particularly favourable light”, portraying the late princess as a “damaged person who stalks the doctor after he ends the affair.”
Friends of Diana described Dr. Khan as the love of Diana’s life and she referred to him as “Mr. Wonderful.” Their relationship was so serious that Diana considered converting to Islam, Dr. Khan’s religion. After it ended, she started up a relationship with Dodi Al Fayed, who perished along Diana in the 1997 Paris car crash.
I don’t know how audiences will react to this, given how popular Diana is, even 14 years after her tragic death. My opinion is that many will not take kindly to any actress – talented or not – portraying the late Princess of Wales.
