There’s no denying the fact that Jared Leto is on a life roll right now.
So it’s no wonder that Jared was honored with a Virtuosos award at the Santa Barbara film festival last night. Still, not everyone was pleased. Especially one heckler who yelled at Jared for playing a transgendered character.
As Jared started his Q&A, a member of the audience yelled, “You don’t deserve an award! Trans misogyny does not deserve an award!” Witnesses say that audience member appeared to be a transgendered woman, who then yelled, “You’re a man! You shouldn’t play a transgendered role!”
Jared seemed taken aback by the comments, but responded with, “Because I’m a man, I don’t deserve to play that part? So you would hold a role against someone who happened to be gay or lesbian — they can’t play a straight part?”
Jared and the heckler went back and forth with their comments, before Jared concluded with, “Then you’ve made sure people that are gay, people that aren’t straight, people like the Rayons of the world would never have the opportunity to turn the tables and explore parts of that art.”
I’d say that’s a pretty perfect response, non? Jared then invited the heckler to meet him backstage following the Q&A, and we’re told they had a very serious heart-to-heart. I respect where the person is coming from, but Jared’s responses are so on point. If we’re to believe then heckler, then someone should tell Neil Patrick Harrishe has to stop playing straight characters.
I can’t find any video of this exchange, but if you do, please post it. But first, launch the gallery to check out all the photos of Jared last night. Guys, I am still obsessed with his hair. What are your thoughts on their back and forth? Sound off in the comments!
