James Franco has wrapped up directing a biopic about actor Sal Mineo, who is being played by Val Lauren. Mineo is best known as James Dean‘s troubled sidekick in the film Rebel Without A Cause.
Mineo, who was murdered in 1976, broke ground as one of Hollywood’s first openly gay actors. A two time-Oscar nominee, his frantic, vulnerable Plato won him vast praise and drove his career until he was too old to play the teen role.
Back in May, Lauren told The Hollywood Reporter:
“Sal Mineo himself was an extraordinary and super complex guy, People know him for Rebel Without a Cause, but he was technically the first actor who came out of the closet. He was very brave.”
The film was shot rapidly paced, as that it only lasted for nine days.
