Henry Cavill, the Man of Steel himself covers the June/July issue of Details magazine and opens up about his struggles with his weight as well as how awesome it is to play Superman. Here are some highlights from the interview.
How he reacted when he got the part:
“When I found out I got the part, I was home playing ‘World of Warcraft.’ I had to play it cool. but the second we hung up, I just sprinted up and down my stairs cheering and whooping like a madman. I kept looking in the mirror, going, ‘I don’t believe it. I’m Superman? I’m Superman!’”
On wanting to please the audience:
“This character matters so much to so many people. I want to get that right. I want to do it justice. I want people to believe in the character and have faith in the character and kids to grow up wanting to be Superman.”
On struggling with his weight:
“I was fat … I was Fat Cavill.” Still, he managed to land his first role in a filmed adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo. Cavill, then 17, got whipped into shape. “I lost one and a half stone” — 21 pounds — “and I wasn’t Fat Cavill anymore.”
