‘Girl Meets World’ And Other 90s Sequels [Flashback]

November 10th, 2012 // Leave a Comment

Topanga and Cory Matthews returning to television in a new series? Yes, please! I was giddy with excitement when I learned there were plans to re-vamp this show for a new generation with a spin-off, “Girl Meets World.” It feels like the 90′s gods are smiling down on us.

Of course, this sequel will only gain my full support if Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel agree to reprise their roles. Neither have yet been confirmed on the new series.

The project, still in early stages of development at Disney Channel, will star the 13-year-old daughter of Cory and Topanga, Riley Matthews. Entertainment Weekly spilled some details on the show, based on the first casting breakdown released by Disney. The series stars Riley Matthews, the 13-year-old daughter of Topanga and Cory, who is said to be “fiercely loyal” and optimistic. That definitely sounds like Cory.

Riley’s best friend, Maya, is described as “darker and edgy” and “less trusting of the world” than her BFF. Maya mirrors Shawn’s character from the original series, an only child, living in a single-parent household, she develops a strong and important bond with Riley and Cory.

So what about the original cast? If everything goes as planned, Cory Matthews will have a strong presence in the new series. Mr. Matthews is the girl’s seventh grade history teacher. Cory will definitely be channeling Mr. Feeny in the new series.

The more I read about this project, the more excited I get!

In addition to Riley, the show will also feature the older and wiser son of Cory and Topanga, Elliot. Elliot is one year older than Riley, and like many older brothers, loves to remind her of that fact.

There are no details yet on whether Shawn, Angela, uncle Eric, or Jack will pop up in the series, but, like young Riley Matthews, I remain optimistic.

Now that there is hope for one beloved show to return, time to make dreams about other possible sequels. Launch the gallery to let us know what show you want to see re-vamped.
