Elton John Wants Organized Religion Banned

November 13th, 2006 // 7 Comments

Not one to bite his tongue before he speaks, Elton John put in his two cents regarding organized religion.

“I think religion has always tried to turn hatred toward gay people,” John said in the Observer newspaper’s Music Monthly Magazine. “Religion promotes the hatred and spite against gays.”

“But there are so many people I know who are gay and love their religion,” he said. “From my point of view, I would ban religion completely. Organized religion doesn’t seem to work. It turns people into really hateful lemmings and it’s not really compassionate.”

He also went on to criticize religious leaders for failing to do anything about conflicts around the world. Although, he also mentioned that musicians haven’t been doing their own part either. “If John Lennon were alive today, he’d be leading it with a vengeance.”

Amen to that.

Call me crazy, but doesn’t this kinda make him a hyocrite if he’s saying we should ban organized religion because in his mind he thinks organized religion hates gays???…..doesn’t that mean he hates organized religion? Is he against hatred here? or just hatred of gays? So should we ban Elton John?

  2. On behalf of all gays, we apologize for Elton’s interruption of your daily activities, and assure you that we have dispatched a team to adjust his hormone replacement patch.

Elton John’s position is simply ridiculous, and and blatantly so.

Ban religion because it demonizes gays? Isn’t that a little egocentric there Elton? Religion has its pluses and minuses, but don’t you think it should be examined and valued for more than just how they view you and your cohorts?

To ban religion of that reason is like saying you want to ban religion because Jews don’t like pork. What, Elton? Thats not the same because they’re not talking about you?

Thats exactly what pork said about you. Go figure.

Okay ChristopherM, you just made me shoot Dr. Pepper out my nose.

Where has Elton gone? I realize he’s always been a bit eccentric but jeez…yes please replace the hormone adjustment patch.

On behalf of all the Christians generalized upon….not all of us hate gays and are doing nothing about the problems in the world. I don’t see you (Elton) stripping yourself of all your luxuries and hoofing it to Africa/Asia/4th world countries. Freakin hippocrit, we do what we can, just like a lot of the non-religious people out there.

Finally Elton has had a moment of clarity: I totally agree with him. There is a difference between individual spirituality (a beautiful communion with mankind God) and organized religion, which has been used throughout time to gather power, spread hatred and fuel wars. If power were taken away from organized religion, the world would be a better place. Now the Catholic church wants to use homophobia to energize its followers – they don’t condone sex between consenting adults of the same sex, but I guess priests hitting on underage altar boys are just OK. The shame!

Could the liberals on this site be any more hypocritical? You just love to think you’re so very tolerant and intelligent. How can you not see that banning religion is the height of intolerance? And how can you possibly not realize that whatever your school of thought is, it could very well be the next to be banned? Grow up.
