Mary in the mud, with pigs.
On the latest episode of BBC’s Downton Abbey, Mary finally gave into to her secret admiration for Charles Blake and they saved the pigs together and got really dirty doing it. That’s about as sexual and provocative as English society gets in those times.
But Lady Edith has a bigger problem and hers is a true controversy indeed.
Edith finds a doctor willing to do illegal abortions by looking in a ladies magazine at the train station. She convinces her aunt Rosamund to go with her, but when she gets to the location she can’t bring herself to go through with it. “I am killing the wanted child of a man I am in love with,” she says. And yet again we are reminded of how shitty women have had it in the past and how shitty some women still have it in parts of the world today.
Edith knows next to nothing about her betrothed Michael. He seemed to have left his hotel in the middle of the night never to be seen or heard from again. Can this chick catch a break? My prediction is that she inherits his newspaper, becomes the editor, and starts writing feminist kick ass articles.
Even though Napier really likes Mary, she isn’t catching on and instead starts to gravitate towards his friend Charles Blake. It’s raining and the pigs might die from the cold, so the two decide to gather them up themselves and end up covered in mud and cooking eggs in the kitchen downstairs. We are supposed to find it endearing that Mary knows how to make eggs, but honestly it just rots of English bourgeois. Very cute, rich girl.
Lord Gillingham shows up, again, and says that he is into her and has dumped his fiancé Mabel Fox. Bleck. Apparently, Gilllingham and Blake were friends from their war time together and now poor Mary has to choose again. (All the while Lady Edith has to try to get rid of her kid because life sucks.)
Everyone freaks out about Gillingham’s surprise visit because that means that Mr. Green-the-rapist has returned. Mrs. Hughes threatens the bastard with his life. Hell yeah. Green starts getting loud and Bates looks like he might kill him at any moment. Baxter is paying attention in order to report back to Thomas, because she is just that desperate for friendship.
And Mary really wants to know what has happened to Anna, but she won’t give up the details. She does find out from Mrs. Hughes. Hopefully she helps stop this sick rapist from roaming the streets any longer.
