Wherever he goes, from Japan to Spain, David Beckham is used to inspiring screaming adoration from fans. But this week the admirers who went weak at the knees at the sight of the England captain were Wembley construction workers. When the player turned up at the stadium, in a hard hat and wellies, builders took a tea break…lasting three hours.
The squad, led by their coach Sven-Goran Eriksson, had taken the morning off from pre-World Cup training at their Hertfordshire camp to visit the giant arena, which is still under construction.
While his colleagues, including Joe Cole and Rio Ferdinand, had an impromptu kickabout on the sandy “pitch” the ever affable Real Madrid player chatted with the workforce. Looking tanned and refreshed after his and Victoria’s party at the weekend, David signed autographs on everything from hats to fluorescent vests.
