AFI FEST 2013 Presented By Audi Special Tribute: An Evening With David O. Russell - Reception

David O. Russell may be on of Hollywood’s hottest directors, but that doesn’t mean that he can’t put his foot in his mouth, especially when it comes to Hollywood’s It girl, Jennifer Lawrence.

The director was quoted talking about his leading lady to the Daily News saying, “I’ll tell you what it is about that girl—talk about 12 years of slavery, that’s what the franchise is. I’m going to get in so much trouble for saying that.”

The franchise in question is The Hunger Games. And yes, he did get in trouble.

David even released a statement, “Clearly, I used a stupid analogy in a poor attempt at humor. I realized it the minute I said it and I’m truly sorry.” Jennifer hasn’t said anything on the subject, although I doubt she’d say that she doesn’t work hard. Not 12 Years A Slave joke hard, but have you seen those movies? It’s all sorts of crazy.

I do appreciate that David apologized. This story fascinates me, because David O. Russell is on a roll of doing no wrong right now. Especially since American Hustle just won all those Golden Globes.

Well, I guess we’ll just have to wait and see if this actually does any damage to David or Jennifer. Probably not–we all know how Hollywood works. What do you think of the joke? Super offensive or just a little offensive? Sound off in the comments!
