Dating After A Spouse Dies: How Long To Wait?

December 9th, 2010 // 3 Comments

Liam Neeson was spotted cuddling up to his movie co-star Laura Brent recently at the London premiere of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. The pair smiled for the cameras as Neeson embraced Brent from behind.

Neeson had been married to Natasha Richardson for 15 years before she suffered a brain injury in 2009 during a skiing accident in Canada and passed away shortly after.

What is the proper etiquette for dating after a spouse dies? Is a year the socially acceptable length or does it depend on how long the pair have been married? Leave me your thoughts!

Are you kidding me? You’re doing this bit because Liam Neeson is dating 18 months after his wife died? 18 months?????? Yes, that’s long enough.

Stupid post. Let the man go on with his life, whats ur problem, whats all the rest of us got to do with it? What should he do? Punish himself? Castrate? Become a frustrared monk? Dead with the dead, living with the living.

The best rule of thumb is one month for every year of marriage 15 years = 15 months of mourning, if he is at 18 months than he is over the threshold.
Studies show that men usually date much quicker after loosing a spouse vs. women average for most men is 9-12 months most women 12-18 months HOWEVER most people that have either been married for more than 20 years or past their 60th birthday rarely get married again.
IN THE END IT IS HIS OWN PERSONAL BUSINESS AND NO ONE ELSE’S, lets take a fictional couple lets say jon and kim are married for 25 years kim dies suddenly and only eight months down the road jon is dating again you may think this is horrible but what you may not know is that possibly jon and kim were only married for the kids, maybe they had been discussing a divorce…, maybe it was a marriage of “convenience” if your not in their bed room you don’t know so you shouldn’t judge
