With the last year and a half being dedicated to The Voice, Christina Aguilera hasn’t been able to release any solo music since 2010′s Bionic. So, by default, the 2012 American Music Awards nominations won’t include her. She’s decided to be involved in the awards ceremony in every other way possible.
The singer attended the press conference for the AMA Nominations, to announce the nominees, and will also performing at the awards show. Aguilera was joined by Lance Bass, Kimberly Cole, Tristan Wilds and Brad Goreski at the JW Marriott at L.A. Live for the conference.
Although Aguilera wasn’t nominated herself, some of the nominees were artists that she’s worked with in the past (awkward, maybe? Hmmm.) such as Nicki Minaj, who lead the nominations with a total of 5, and Maroon 5, who’s lead singer Adam Levine is also a judge on The Voice. Also leading the pack is Rihanna, yet again, who has over 3 nods. I guess it pays to release an album every year. Keeps you relevant! In the eyes of awards shows at least.
Among the 20 categories some repeat nominees also include Carrie Underwood, Katy Perry, Adele and Kelly Clarkson to name a few. It looks like this year is the year of the songstress. Another trend in the nominations was boy bands. With British sensations The Wanted and One Direction both being nominated at least once, it’s safe to say that boy bands are here to stay.

What do you think of the list? Happy with all of the nominations? Think they’re deserved?
One person who doesn’t think so is a fellow boy band member, Big Time Rush‘s Carlos Pena Jr. The singer tweeted his response to the nominees, indirectly expressing anger towards the nominations. No doubt his tweet was a result of the nominations of Justin Bieber, and some of the other artists nominated for more than 1 year in a row. Not to mention the nominations of fellow boy banders One Direction and The Wanted, who along with Bieber, have all toured with the Nickelodeon-made group (both other boy bands as opening acts for BTR). Pena stated that the awards failed to nominate artists that “work just as hard.” A defensible argument considering Big Time Rush has been making music for years past both The Wanted and One Direction, and that their 2 studio albums and singles have gone Gold and Double Platinum in the US and abroad. Perhaps the nominations are a bit biased. Speculations have definitely arisen from the singer’s tweet.
