- The $2 million party hosted over 1,200 guests
- Tables were decorated with 15-foot topiaries, cypresses, boxwoods and vases filled with either hydrangea and pomegranates or silver-plated fronts and calla lilies
- Plates overflowed with grapes, strawberries, raspberries, prosciutto, Parmesan and pieces of raw fish wrapped in lettuce and peppercorns
At 11 p.m., the lights went out and eight dancers from the cabaret Crazy Horse arrived on stage wearing only bearskin hats of the Buckingham Palace guards, before Kylie Minogue appeared, performing some of her hits, like “I Should Be So Lucky” and “Can’t Get You Out of My Head.” At 11:45, Heidi Klum introduced Mr. Cavalli, saying, “You have such a vision, and you make us look beautiful.”
The designer replied, “My voice is nothing compared to what I have in my heart tonight” as a four-tier birthday cake, at least 10 feet tall and festooned with dozens of sparklers, was wheeled onto the stage. Streamers exploded from the walls, coating the room in little bits of red tape, at that point rendering inedible whatever was left of the buffets.
It sounds fabulous, over-the-top, grandiose, superfluous and grand. Damn, I wish I would have been there.
