Chinese competition has forced Daley to take the major step of leaving school to try and improve his chances of getting a medal in London.

“From January onwards I’m going to take a break from school, so that I have that half a year to train for the Olympics,” he said.

“I’m hoping to get my A-levels done by then and if I have to retake any of them I’ll do that in June or go back to school the following year. It’s going to be good to concentrate on diving rather than splitting my time with school. I’ve never done that before.

“I will be able to work on my consistency, with nothing else to worry about. It’s important when you are diving against the Chinese. They are so far ahead of everyone else.”
