When I first heard about the live-action version spin-off of Sleeping Beauty, I admit I was a little apprehensive about the entire thing.

Entertainment Weekly’s exclusive still on Angelina Jolie and Vivienne Jolie-Pitt has put my mind at ease. Maleficent is now on my list of highly-anticipated films.

Vivienne is portraying a young Aurora, the beautiful princess who falls under the villains spell. How did the cutie end up getting her role? The answer might surprise you.

None of the other young child actors were willing to go next to Jolie when she was decked out in her villainous costume. Normally neither she nor Brad Pitt would really have any of their children acting in a role.

The actress shared, “The other 3- and 4-year-old [performers] wouldn’t come near me. It had to be a child that liked me and wasn’t afraid of my horns and my eyes and my claws. So it had to be Viv.” Ideally, someone else would have played the role, but out of necessity they cast the blonde cutie.

Interestingly, to have her children approve of her new role, she decided to explain Maleficent to them, so they would see things from her point of view. Usually we’re forced to see just the “good” side of a story. This is the opportunity to understand what made the villain become the villain in the first place.

Shiloh Jolie-Pitt is now a fan of the character. After her mother explained the role, something interesting happened “The next day, I heard Shiloh getting into a fight with another kid, defending Maleficent, saying, ‘You don’t understand her!’”

Be on the look out for Pax Jolie-Pitt and Zahara Jolie-Pitt. Both of the children will be making a cameo in the film!
